Neon Bruises

The rain in LA doesn't wash anything away; it just smears the grime around. I sat in my office, the neon sign outside flickering "Private Investigator" in a rhythmic, dying pulse. The ceiling fan chopped the smoke from my cigarette into grey ribbons.

Then she walked in. She looked like a million bucks, but she smelled like a cheap motel and desperation. She wanted me to find her sister, a girl who had vanished into the neon jungle of the Sunset Strip.

I found her three days later in a club called 'The Velvet Cage'. She wasn't missing; she was just owned. When I pulled her into the alleyway, she didn't thank me. She just looked at me with eyes that had seen the bottom of a very deep hole.

She pulled back her sleeve. The bruises were a map of a very specific kind of hate. Professional. Calculated. The work of a man who liked to see how much a human could take before they stopped being human.

"He's coming for me," she said, her voice flat. "And he doesn't like it when his property wanders."

I looked at her, and for the first time in ten years, I felt something other than boredom. I felt a cold, hard anger. I didn't take her to the police—the police in this town are just the pimp's payroll. Instead, I took her to a safe house and gave her a .38 Special.

"You can't run from a man like that," I told her. "But you can make sure he doesn't follow you."

Two nights later, the pimp—a polished piece of filth named Julian—walked into his own office to find his empire in ruins. He didn't find a missing girl; he found a woman who had stopped being a victim. She didn't use the gun to kill him; she used it to make him sign over every cent of his assets to the other girls in the Cage.

Then, she walked out into the rain, leaving him alive but broken, a king of nothing. I watched from the shadows, lit a cigarette, and wondered if the city had just gotten a little cleaner, or if the grime had simply changed color.

The email arrived at 4:17 AM, which was exactly when Marcus Webb expected it to arrive. His phone buzzed on the nightstand, and he picked it up with one hand, the other still curled around the empty space where his wife used to sleep.
