The Rotating Silence

The station is a white cube of sterile light and recycled air. Everything is measured. Everything is optimized. My life is a sequence of intervals: eight hours of sleep, two hours of nutrient paste, twelve hours of maintenance.

I am Silas. I clean the Mirror.

The Mirror is a masterpiece of geometry, a perfect circle of silver that reflects the sun with a precision that borders on the divine. My job is to ensure that not a single speck of dust disrupts that perfection. I move across the surface in a slow, rhythmic glide, a ghost in a pressurized suit, erasing the imperfections of the universe.

We left Earth three years ago. The mission was simple: reach the edge of the Oort Cloud and establish a permanent observation post. We were the pioneers, the chosen few who would witness the true boundary of our world.

The disaster happened in a heartbeat.

A navigation glitch—a single misplaced decimal in a line of code—triggered an emergency burn. We didn't overshoot the target; we fell into a gravitational well. A rogue brown dwarf, invisible and cold, had snagged us in its grip.

The ship fought. The engines screamed until they burned out. And then, we stopped.

We are not orbiting the dwarf; we are spiraling. Slowly. Inevitably. The calculations are absolute. In forty years, we will be crushed by the tidal forces of the dark star. There is no rescue. The distance to Earth is now a number so large it has lost all meaning.

I still clean the Mirror.

Every day, I glide across the silver skin, scrubbing away the microscopic debris. My crewmates have mostly given up. Some spend their days in a drug-induced haze; others simply stare at the walls of the cube. But I continue.

I find a strange peace in the repetition. The act of cleaning is the only thing that remains true in a world of lies. The Mirror doesn't care that we are doomed. The vacuum doesn't care that we are screaming. The only thing that matters is the shine.

I look at the reflection of the brown dwarf in the silver surface—a distorted, amber eye watching us die. I realize that my life has become a mirror of the universe: a vast, empty space punctuated by a few moments of meaningless effort.

I will continue to clean. I will make this mirror perfect. And when the gravity finally tears us apart, I want the last thing the universe sees to be a flawless reflection of the void.
