The Tutor's Ledger

October 12, 1902. I have been employed by Mr. Thorne to tutor his ward, Eliza, in the fundamentals of French and Italian. Mr. Thorne is a man of severe disposition and an appetite for control that borders on the pathological. He treats Eliza not as a daughter or a pupil, but as a piece of furniture that must be polished to a specific luster.

November 20, 1902. Eliza is a revelation. Her mind is a sponge, but it is a sponge that filters for meaning. While we study the classics, she asks questions that betray a hunger for something far beyond the grammar of a foreign tongue. She does not want to speak French to impress the guests at the winter ball; she wants to read the forbidden pamphlets that the suffragettes are distributing in the East End.

December 15, 1902. I have noticed a change in Eliza's behavior. She has become secretive, her eyes darting to the door whenever I enter the room. She has begun to write in a cipher—a mixture of the languages we have studied and a personal code of her own. I suspect she is communicating with someone outside the house. As her teacher, I feel a conflict of loyalty, but as a woman, I feel a kinship with her desperation.

January 5, 1903. The tension in the house is palpable. Mr. Thorne has become increasingly suspicious. He has forbidden Eliza from using the library after six o'clock. Today, I found a scrap of paper in the wastebin: a ticket for a steamer to Marseille, dated for next Tuesday. Eliza is planning to flee.

January 12, 1903. The tragedy unfolded with a clinical precision. Mr. Thorne did not shout; he did not rage. He simply entered the room while Eliza and I were discussing the poetry of Baudelaire and produced a ledger. In it, he had recorded every word Eliza had written in her cipher, every secret contact she had made. He had been reading her letters all along, allowing her to believe she was escaping just to see how far her hope would stretch before it snapped.

He didn't send her to a convent or a sanitarium. That would be too simple. Instead, he burned her books, confiscated her passport, and informed her that her 'education' was over. He told her that from now on, she was forbidden from speaking any language other than English, for the luxury of a second tongue is reserved for those who possess a will of their own.

February 1, 1903. Eliza sits by the window, staring at the grey London sky. She is perfectly silent. She no longer asks questions. She no longer writes. She has returned to being a piece of furniture, but this time, she is broken. I continue to teach her, for that is my job, but we both know that the languages we speak are now merely the sounds of a closing door.
