Kai Nakamura had been a librarian for exactly fourteen minutes when the Library tried to kill him for the first time.

It was not personal. The Library—capital L, the Alexandrian Infinite, the Great Repository of All Written Thought—had been trying to kill its librarians since the Indexing War of 2089. It was, according to the orientation manual that Kai had not been given, a feature rather than a bug. "The Library tests its keepers," the manual would have said, if it existed. "Only the worthy survive to shelve."

Kai had not wanted to be a librarian. He had wanted to be a data smuggler, which was the family business. His father ran contraband knowledge through the back doors of the Repository—classified histories, suppressed scientific papers, the complete works of authors the corporate councils had deemed "culturally obsolete." But his father had been caught last month, sentenced to the Deep Stacks, and Kai had taken the librarian's oath to buy his father's freedom.

The oath was simple: serve the Library for one year, and your family's debts are erased. The catch was that the Library's definition of "serve" included surviving.

Kai's first assignment was straightforward: retrieve a book from the Philosophy wing, Section Zeta-9, Shelf 47,821. The book was titled "On the Impossibility of Silence" by an author whose name had been redacted. It was, the requisition form noted, "urgently needed for administrative review."

The Philosophy wing was a labyrinth of iron staircases and catwalks suspended over an abyss that had no visible bottom. The shelves extended in every direction, organized according to a classification system that changed every time you looked away. Kai navigated by instinct, the way his father had taught him: follow the spine numbers, ignore the titles, never read anything you're not authorized to read.

Shelf 47,821 was guarded by a Cataloguer—one of the Library's automated defense systems, a creature of brass and paper that could identify and incapacitate any unauthorized reader in less than a second. Kai presented his credentials, held his breath, and the Cataloguer let him pass.

The book was small. Leather-bound. It fit in the palm of his hand. When Kai opened it, he expected philosophy. Instead, he found a list of names—thousands of them, arranged chronologically. The first name was his father's.

Kai understood in that moment what "On the Impossibility of Silence" really was. It was not a book. It was an indictment. A record of every person the Library had ever "retired" to the Deep Stacks, and the real reason for their sentencing. His father had not been caught smuggling contraband. His father had been caught reading a book the Library wanted erased.

Kai closed the book and tucked it into his jacket. The Cataloguer whirred questioningly. "Book retrieved," Kai said, his voice steady. "Proceeding to administrative review."

He walked out of the Philosophy wing, past the iron stairs and the bottomless abyss, and instead of turning toward the administrative offices, he turned toward the back doors. Toward the smuggling routes his father had shown him when he was a child. Toward freedom.

The Library tried to kill him twice more before he reached the exit. He survived both times, because his father had taught him well. Because the best librarians, as it turned out, were the ones who knew which books were worth dying for.
