The Silk Compass

Captain Elias Vane had lost his ship, his crew, and his mind, in that order, and he was just beginning to miss them.

He sat on the beach of an island that didn't appear on any chart, watching the tide come in. The Compass of Silk—a navigational instrument made of woven silk threads that hummed when pointed toward land—lay in his lap. It had led him here, to this moment, to this island where the trees grew in spirals and the birds had too many wings.

"You're awake," a voice said.

Elias looked up. A woman stood at the edge of the tree line. She wore a coat of seagull feathers and held a harpoon that looked like it had been carved from a single diamond. "I'm Orca," she said. "This is my island. You're trespassing."

"I'm sorry," Elias said. "The Compass—it brought me here. I didn't mean to—"

"The Compass doesn't bring people here," Orca said. She walked down the beach, her bare feet leaving no prints in the sand. "The Compass shows you the way to the thing you want most. And you, Captain Vane, want to be found."

Elias felt a chill that had nothing to do with the wind. "How do you know that?"

"Because you're the first person in three hundred years to sail into the Maelstrom and live. You wanted to die, Captain. But the sea wouldn't let you. So it brought you to me."

Orca sat down next to him. She took the Compass from his lap and examined it. The silk threads were still humming, a gentle vibration that Elias could feel in his teeth. "This is a thief's tool," Orca said. "It steals direction from the wind. No wonder the sea is angry with you."

"What do I do?" Elias asked.

"You learn to navigate without it," Orca said. She stood up and pointed out to sea. "The tide is turning. If you want to leave this island, you need to go now. But you'll have to find your own way. No Compass. No maps. Just the stars and your own damn stubbornness."

Elias stood. He looked at the Compass, then at Orca. Then he threw the Compass into the surf.

"I don't need it," he said. "I never did."

He waded into the water. Behind him, he heard Orca laugh. "Good," she said. "Now let's see if you can actually sail."
