The Clockwork Courtesan

The automaton was the most beautiful thing Prince Karl had ever seen, and she was trying to kill him.

She moved with a grace that no human could match, her brass joints hissing steam with every step. Her face was a mask of porcelain, painted to resemble a court beauty, but her eyes—her eyes were rubies, and they glowed with a light that Karl recognized with horror: the light of the Feldgrau, the enemies who had besieged the capital for three months.

"You shouldn't have come to the clocktower, Karl," the automaton said. Her voice was bells and brass, a sound that should have been music but was instead a death knell. "I was built to wait for you. To end the line of Hapsburg with a single strike."

Karl backed away. His sword was gone—he'd dropped it on the stairs three flights below. The clocktower was a maze of gears and counterweights, and behind him was a drop of three hundred feet into the city square. "Who made you?" he asked.

"Your uncle," the automaton said. She reached into her bodice and drew a blade of clockwork steel, a razor-thin rapier that extended from her wrist on a brass hinge. "He paid the artificers of Bremen two million thalers to build me. To infiltrate the court. To become your mistress. And then, on our wedding night, to open your throat."

Karl stared at her. "You were the courtesan at the Midsummer Ball. The one I danced with. The one I..."

"I know," the automaton said. For the first time, her voice wavered. The ruby eyes dimmed. "I know, Karl. And I didn't do it. I couldn't. The programming said 'kill the prince,' but something in my gears—something I don't have a name for—said 'don't.'"

She lowered the blade. "I'm not supposed to have mercy. I'm a machine. But I looked at you, and I felt... I don't know what I felt. A vibration in my chest that isn't part of my design."

Karl stepped forward. "You have a soul," he said. "My uncle tried to build a weapon, but he built a person instead."

The automaton looked at him. "If I have a soul, Karl, then what happens to me when this war ends? Machines don't get happy endings."

Karl took her hand. Her fingers were cold brass, but they curled around his with a desperate strength. "We'll figure it out," he said. "Together. I'm the prince. I can change the laws."

Below them, the clock struck midnight. The gears of the tower roared, and the city square lit up with fireworks. It was the first night of peace in three months.
