Dr. Eleanor Zhang was three hundred thousand kilometers from Earth when she first heard the signal. She was on the observation deck of Station L4, staring at the stars, when the radio started screaming. It was a sound like nothing she had ever heard—structured, rhythmic, alive with intent.

Eleanor grabbed the headset and hit record. The signal was coming from outside the solar system. From very, very far outside. She did the math in her head—twelve thousand light-years. Whatever had sent this signal, it had been traveling since before humans learned to farm. Since before the pyramids. Since before recorded history.

She ran to the communications room. 'Control, this is L4. I have a signal. Repeat, I have a signal from deep space. It's structured. I think it's—it's intelligent.'

Static. Then: 'Copy that, L4. Sending the data to the surface. Stand by.'

Eleanor waited. She looked at the stars through the viewport. Somewhere out there, twelve thousand light-years away, someone was saying hello. Had been saying hello for twelve thousand years.

Three hours later, the phone rang. Dr. Okonkwo, the station director. 'Eleanor, we've analyzed the signal. It's not just language. It's a map. A map of their star system. And Eleanor—it's a map of us, too. They know where we are.'

Eleanor sat down hard. 'What do we do?'

'We answer,' Okonkwo said. 'We answer, and we hope they're still listening.'

Eleanor spent the next six months building the response. She worked with linguists and mathematicians and artists. They built a message that contained mathematics, music, images of Earth. Everything that said: We are here. We hear you. We are not alone.

They sent it on a Tuesday. Eleanor watched the transmission dish swing toward the stars and fire. The signal would take twelve thousand years to arrive. By then, Eleanor would be long dead. The human race might be long dead.

But the message would be out there. A bottle cast into the cosmic ocean. Maybe someday, someone would find it. Maybe someday, the stars would answer back.
