The Last Witness

The universe was a cold, dark place. The last star had flickered out a trillion years ago. There was no light, no heat, and no time. There was only the Void.

And in the center of the Void sat Julian.

Julian was the Last Witness. He had spent an eternity "leveling up" his consciousness, absorbing the data of every civilization that had ever existed. He had seen the birth of the first galaxies and the death of the last black hole. He was the sum total of all knowledge, all memory, and all pain.

He was a god of a dead universe.

For a trillion years, he had sat in the silence, replaying the memories of a billion worlds. He had lived a trillion lives—he had been a king, a slave, a lover, a murderer. He had experienced every possible combination of joy and suffering.

But the weight of the data was becoming too much. His mind was a library that had grown so large it was beginning to collapse under its own gravity.

He realized that he was the only thing preventing the universe from restarting. The "Big Bang" was not a random event; it was a release of tension. But as long as the Last Witness existed, the tension was held in place by his own observation. He was the anchor that kept the universe in its state of death.

"I am the lock," Julian whispered, his voice echoing in the emptiness. "And I am the key."

He looked back at the memories of the world he had come from—a small, blue planet called Earth. He remembered a girl he had loved a trillion years ago. He remembered the smell of rain on hot asphalt. He remembered the feeling of a hand in his.

He realized that for a new world to be born, the old one had to be completely forgotten. Not just the stars and the planets, but the *memory* of them.

Julian began the process of "Absolute Deletion."

He started with the galaxies. He erased the Andromeda, the Milky Way, the voids and the filaments. He felt the knowledge slipping away, and with it, a profound sense of relief.

Then he erased the species. The humans, the aliens, the gods. He felt the love and the hate vanish.

Finally, he turned the deletion on himself.

He erased his name. He erased his memories. He erased his capacity to feel.

In the final microsecond, Julian was no longer a god or a man. He was a single, infinitesimal point of infinite density. He was the tension. He was the scream.

And then, he let go.

A flash of light, more intense than a trillion suns, erupted in the Void. Space and time exploded outward in a violent, beautiful rush of energy.

The Big Bang had begun.

And in the new universe, on a small, blue planet, a boy looked up at the stars and felt a strange, inexplicable sense of longing, as if he were remembering a dream he had had before the world began.
