The Final Coordinate

Director Thorne believed in the absolute authority of the line. In the era of the Great Deterrence, where two superpowers held the world hostage with a thousand nuclear warheads, a border was not a line on a map—it was a trigger.

Thorne discovered the "Sliver."

It was a discrepancy of less than a kilometer in the Strategic Buffer Zone. The opposing empire had shifted their sensor array, effectively claiming a small piece of the neutral zone. To a lesser man, it was a rounding error. To Thorne, it was an existential threat.

"If we allow them to move the line by a kilometer today," Thorne told the Joint Chiefs, "they will move it by a province tomorrow. Sovereignty is binary: you either have it, or you are a vassal."

Thorne did not seek a diplomatic solution. He sought a correction.

He ordered a "calibration exercise," moving a division of armored vehicles into the disputed sliver. He wanted to show the enemy that the line was a wall of steel. He believed that a display of absolute strength would force the other side to retreat.

But the other side did not see a calibration exercise. They saw a breach.

The opposing empire, already on the edge of a domestic collapse, used Thorne's move as the perfect pretext for a "defensive" escalation. They moved their missiles. Thorne responded by raising the alert level. The cycle of escalation accelerated, driven by the cold logic of game theory and the arrogance of men who believed they could control the chaos.

For three days, the world held its breath. Thorne sat in the bunker, staring at the digital map. He watched the red and blue lines clash and overlap, the "Sliver" now the center of a global storm.

He realized too late that the other side had wanted the escalation. They didn't care about the kilometer of land; they wanted the excuse to purge their internal enemies through a foreign war. Thorne had given them the perfect gift.

The first strike hit the command center at 04:00.

Thorne didn't feel the heat, only a sudden, blinding whiteness. In the microsecond before his consciousness vanished, he looked at the map one last time. He saw the lines dissolving, the colors bleeding into a single, uniform grey.

The borders were finally gone. The empires were gone. The "Sliver" was gone.

The world had finally achieved a perfect, symmetrical boundary: a wasteland of radioactive ash that stretched from pole to pole, where no one owned anything, and no one was left to claim it.
