The swing hadn't worked since Junior got his daddy's truck and drove it into the magnolia. That was eleven years ago. Mama still kept it oiled.

Delia sat on the porch steps, watching the heat rise off the blacktop like steam from a pot. Her boy was inside, fifteen now, with his father's jaw and his grandmother's eyes—the ones that saw too much and said nothing.

Supper was beans again. She had nothing else.

"You going to sit there all day?" Mama's voice came through the screen door, thin as thread.

"Yes ma'am."

The silence that followed had weight. Delia had grown up inside it, the silence of a house where things happened that no one named. Her daddy's hands. The way Junior flinched at loud noises. The photograph of her sister that got taken down after the funeral and never spoken of again.

The magnolia had grown back. You couldn't see the dent in the trunk anymore.

Delia thought about leaving. She thought about it every day—the bus to Memphis, a motel room, some kind of work. But the boy wouldn't leave his grandmother, and she couldn't leave the boy, and so they were all stuck here in this house that smelled like mold and copper and old regret.

Junior came out and sat beside her. He smelled like the cheap soap she bought at the Dollar General.

"Mama, I'm sorry about what I said."

"You were angry."

"I shouldn't of."

"No." She put her arm around him. "You shouldn't have."

The sun was going down, painting the sky the colour of a bruise. In a few hours, the crickets would start up, and the cicadas, and the whole dark world would fill with sound that almost drowned out the quiet.

Tomorrow Delia would make beans again, and sit on the porch steps again, and wait for nothing in particular.

That was just how it was.
