In the village of San Esperar, grief had a colour. Everyone knew this. The women who had lost children turned a pale violet; those who had lost lovers faded to blue-grey like a winter sky. Abuela Camila had been green for sixty years—her husband had vanished into the mountains and never returned—but lately she had begun to change.

"Now you see it?" she asked young Mateo, who had come to learn the old ways.

Mateo squinted at her. "I see... yellow. At the edges."

"Yellow." Abuela nodded as if this were both expected and terrible. "Yellow is for hope. It means I am finally beginning to forget."

"Can you forget on purpose?"

"You can try. But forgetting is like water through a sieve. The more you chase it, the faster it slips away."

That night, Mateo saw Abuela sitting by the river, holding a stone from her husband's collection. She was whispering—not prayers, but ordinary things. The colour of his eyes. The way he hummed while shaving. The argument they'd had about the goats.

By morning, she was entirely yellow, glowing softly like a candle.

And then, just as suddenly, she was white—empty of all colour, clean as fresh paper.

"Have I forgotten?" she asked, touching her own face.

Mateo looked at her, at the river, at the mountains where her husband had vanished.

"I don't know," he said. "But you are still here."

Abuela Camila smiled, and the smile was gold.
