The Dance of the Absurd

The apartment was small, smelling of burnt toast and old paper. Outside the window, the city of Orizon continued its frantic, meaningless bustle, unaware that the sky had turned a permanent, bruised shade of indigo.

Julian and Elena had decided to spend their last twenty-four hours together.

They didn't talk about the "Collapse." They didn't talk about the fact that the laws of physics had simply given up, and that the universe was folding in on itself like a piece of discarded origami. The news had been official for a week: the end was absolute, inevitable, and painless.

"Pass me the jam," Elena said, her voice casual, as if they were discussing the weather.

Julian handed her the jar. He watched the way the sunlight—now a pale, flickering amber—hit the glass. He found himself fascinated by the tiny bubbles trapped in the preserve. They were so small, so insignificant, and yet they were the only things in the world that felt real.

They spent the morning arguing about a book they had both read in college. It was a tedious, circular argument about the nature of free will, the kind of debate they had had a hundred times over the last five years.

"You're missing the point," Julian said, leaning back in his creaky wooden chair. "The point isn't whether we chose this, but that we are choosing to argue about it while the world ends."

Elena laughed. It was a short, bright sound that felt out of place in the oppressive silence of the apartment. "That's exactly why it's a perfect argument, Julian. It's completely useless."

They spent the afternoon walking through the city. The streets were a surreal mix of panic and apathy. Some people were looting jewelry stores, others were lying face-down on the pavement, and a few were dancing in the middle of the intersections, their movements jerky and desperate.

Julian and Elena ignored them all. They stopped at a small bakery and bought two cinnamon rolls, eating them in silence as they watched a man try to sell a gold watch to a stray dog.

"Do you think there's anything after?" Elena asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"I think there's a very long sleep," Julian replied. "And I think we've both been tired for a very long time."

They returned to the apartment as the sun began to set—or rather, as the sun began to stretch, its sphere elongating into a thin, glowing needle.

They lay on the floor, side by side, staring at the ceiling. They didn't hold hands; they didn't exchange grand confessions of love. They had already said everything there was to say. Instead, they just breathed together, their heartbeats syncing in the growing quiet.

"I'm glad we had the jam," Elena whispered.

"Me too," Julian replied.

As the walls of the apartment began to blur and the ceiling dissolved into a swirl of indigo light, Julian felt a strange sense of peace. The universe was a joke, a grand, cosmic prank with no punchline. And in the end, the only way to win was to be the one who laughed.

He closed his eyes, and as the void finally claimed them, he could still taste the cinnamon on his tongue.
