The Decimal Error

The Galactic Hegemony was a monument to absolute precision. Every orbit, every tax bracket, and every heartbeat in the empire was governed by the "Universal Equation," a mathematical formula so perfect that it had eliminated war, poverty, and uncertainty.

Professor Z was the High Custodian of the Equation. He lived in a spire of floating obsidian, spending his centuries ensuring that not a single decimal point drifted. In the Hegemony, mathematics was not a tool; it was the only god.

The empire was on the verge of the Great Unification. In three days, the Equation would be expanded to cover the last remaining void-sectors, and the universe would finally be a single, synchronized machine.

While performing a routine audit of the 14th-dimensional constants, Z found it.

A rounding error.

In the trillionth decimal place of the primary gravity constant, a '4' had been recorded where a '3' should have been. It was a mistake so infinitesimal that it had gone unnoticed for ten billion years.

Z stared at the screen. He tried to correct it, but the system rejected the change. The error had already propagated. The Equation had built the entire empire on a lie—a tiny, microscopic flaw in the foundation of reality.

He began to calculate the impact. The error was not linear; it was exponential. For eons, the Hegemony had been fighting the natural drift of the universe by unconsciously compensating for this mistake. But now, the compensation had reached its limit.

The "Correction" was coming.

Z looked out his window at the sprawling, golden cities of the empire. He saw the ships gliding in perfect formation, the citizens living in synchronized bliss. He realized that the very perfection he had spent his life guarding was actually a tension, a spring wound too tight.

At exactly 12:00:00, the decimal point shifted.

It didn't happen with a bang. It happened with a click.

The gravity in the spire suddenly inverted. The obsidian walls didn't break; they simply ceased to be solid. The golden cities didn't explode; they folded into themselves, becoming infinitely small and infinitely dense.

Z felt himself being compressed. He saw the entire Galactic Hegemony—the trillion stars, the quadrillion souls, the eons of order—collapse into a single, dimensionless point.

In the final microsecond, Z felt a surge of genuine laughter. He had spent his life fearing the error, only to find that the error was the only thing that had ever been real.

The universe returned to zero. The Equation was finally balanced.
