The Delete Key

The rain in Los Angeles didn't wash anything away; it just moved the grime from one street to another. Detective Miles sat in his office, the neon sign outside flickering a rhythmic, sickly pink. He was drinking something that tasted like kerosene and regret, staring at a file that didn't make sense.

The client had been a physicist named Dr. Aris Thorne. Thorne had disappeared three days ago, leaving behind a note that simply read: *“The simulation is leaking. Find the exit.”*

Miles had spent forty-eight hours tracing Thorne's movements through the underbelly of the city. He found the physicist in a derelict warehouse by the docks, huddled over a terminal that looked like it belonged in a museum. Thorne was skeletal, his eyes wide with a terror that went beyond the physical.

"It's not real, Miles," Thorne had whispered, his voice a dry rattle. "None of it. The buildings, the rain, the way your heart aches for a woman who left you ten years ago... it's all just optimized code. We're in a closed-loop simulation, and the server is running out of memory."

Miles had laughed. He'd seen a lot of crazy in LA, but this was a new peak. Then Thorne showed him. He pointed to a corner of the room where the wall was simply... missing. Not broken, but absent. A jagged hole of absolute blackness where the textures had failed to load.

"There's a backdoor," Thorne said, his hand trembling over a red toggle on the console. "A way to upload our consciousness to the Root. To the real world. But it requires a massive energy surge. I just need one more second to calibrate the frequency."

Miles looked at the toggle. He looked at Thorne. And then he thought about the debt he owed to the syndicate, the way the world had chewed him up and spat him out, the sheer, exhausting weight of existing in a city that hated him.

He didn't want to go to the Root. He didn't want to see the "real" world, because he suspected the real world was just as ugly as this one. But he did want the noise to stop.

As Thorne reached for the switch, Miles stepped forward and slammed his hand down on the console, not on the upload key, but on the system override.

He didn't know what the button did. He just wanted to break something.

The screen flashed a single word: **PURGE**.

The sound that followed was not an explosion, but a sigh. The warehouse vanished first. Then the docks. Then the neon lights of the city. Miles stood in a void of white light, watching as the world was deleted, block by block, like a sketch being erased by a giant, invisible hand.

He was the last thing left. He felt the erase-head reach his own mind.

"Well," Miles whispered to the emptiness, "at least I don't have to pay the rent."
