The Absurd Cycle

(Style: Dirty Realism / Existentialism)

You are the man on the island. You don't remember your name, and it doesn't matter. Names are for people who have a place to go. You have a cauldron, a mine, and a schedule.

Every day is the same. You wake up in a hut made of whale ribs. You drag coal from a hole in the ground. You boil oil. You wait for the moon.

The old man who taught you this died three years ago. He didn't leave a will, just a book of dates and a copper bell. He told you that if you didn't light the fire, the world would end. You believed him for a long time. You believed it because the alternative—that you were doing this for nothing—was too heavy to carry.

One night, you ascended. You found a star, you cleaned it, and you felt a flicker of something that might have been love, or perhaps just a memory of a dream. You came back down, and you stayed.

But then, you started noticing the patterns.

You noticed that the sun rose even on the days you were late. You noticed that the "dawn" looked exactly the same whether you used the premium whale oil or the sludge from the bottom of the pot. You noticed that the horizon never changed, that the sea never moved, and that the stars in the sky were just painted dots on a ceiling of grey stone.

One morning, you stood on the shore and looked at the sun. It didn't look like a star. It looked like a giant, rusted lightbulb, flickering with a dying current.

You realized the truth: there is no world. There is only the island, the cauldron, and the cycle. The "people" you were saving were just echoes in the wind. The "love" you felt was a programmed response to the loneliness.

You stood there for a long time, the torch in your hand. You could just stop. You could let the darkness take the island. You could finally sleep.

But then, you looked at the copper bell. You thought about the rhythm of the work—the weight of the coal, the smell of the oil, the precise moment the flame touched the surface. It was the only thing in the universe that was yours.

You didn't light the fire because you wanted to save the world. You lit the fire because you liked the way the flame looked against the blackness. You lit the fire because the act of lighting it was the only thing that proved you existed.

You smiled a thin, colorless smile and threw the torch.
