The Recursive Mirror

The silence of the *Void-Walker* was my only companion until I found the city.

The Micro-City was a mirror of my own mind. Every street, every building, every flickering light seemed to echo a memory I had long since buried. When I met the High Archon, she didn't greet me as a stranger. She greeted me as a long-lost version of myself.

"You've come back to the beginning," she whispered. Her voice was my own voice, shifted an octave higher, stripped of its weariness.

I spent weeks in the city, but the fascination soon turned into a creeping dread. I began to notice discrepancies. The Archon knew things she couldn't possibly know—the exact way my mother's voice sounded when she was angry, the specific scent of the rain in my childhood home, the secret shame of the thing I had done before I left Earth.

"How do you know these things?" I demanded, my voice shaking.

She smiled, and for a second, her face flickered, revealing a glimpse of a void beneath the skin. "Because we are the same, Voyager. We are just different iterations of the same equation."

I rushed to the ship's archives, scanning the logs of my journey. I found a hidden file, encrypted with a key that only I knew. I opened it and felt the world tilt.

The file was a report from a higher-dimensional entity. It described an experiment in "Recursive Consciousness." The goal was to see how a sentient mind would react to the total loss of its species, repeated across a billion different scales and scenarios.

I was not the last human. I was Iteration 4,802.

The "Great Flash" was a simulated trigger. The "Micro-City" was a controlled environment. The "Voyager" was a variable. Every time I reached the end of the narrative—every time I decided whether to save or destroy the embryos—the experiment was reset.

I looked at the High Archon. She wasn't a survivor. She was the observer, the one who recorded my reactions and tweaked the parameters for the next run.

"Is it over?" I asked, my voice a hollow shell.

"Almost," she replied. "This iteration was particularly interesting. Your capacity for grief was 12% higher than the previous one. We'll keep that for the next version."

I felt a sudden, sharp click in the back of my mind. The world around me began to dissolve into pixels of white light. The city, the Archon, the black Earth—all of it vanished.

I woke up in the pilot's seat of the *Void-Walker*. I looked out the window and saw Pluto receding into the distance.

"I'm the last one," I whispered to the silence. "I'm the only one left."

And I felt a flicker of a memory—a shimmering, micro-city—but it vanished before I could grasp it, leaving only a cold, familiar void.
