The Purest Poverty

New York City in 1924 was a fever dream of champagne and jazz, a city trying to outrun its own shadow. Elias Vance, a man who had seen the mud of the Somme and the silence of the dead, now walked the streets as a shadow himself. He worked for the "Liquidation Committee," a group of men who owned the skyline and now sought to own the future.

The Aetherial Hegemony had arrived with a promise: a Universal Basic Existence. No more hunger, no more toil. But the standard was set by the lowest common denominator. To ensure the "standard" was high enough for the elites to remain comfortable in their retirement, the lowest of the low had to be erased.

Elias found his target in a tenement on the Lower East Side. Julian Thorne—no, this was a different man, a former socialite who had cast off his silks for a burlap sack. He sat in a room that smelled of old books and incense.

"You were one of us once," Elias said, leaning against the peeling wallpaper. "Why choose this? The Hegemony offers a world where no one has to struggle. Why fight for the right to be poor?"

The ascetic looked up, his gaze clear and terrifyingly calm. "Because struggle is the only thing that is truly ours, Vance. The Hegemony offers a peace that is actually a void. If there is no gap between the highest and the lowest, there is no movement. No aspiration. No art. They aren't saving us; they are flattening us into a single, grey plane of existence."

Elias thought of the parties he had attended, the hollow laughter of people who had everything and felt nothing. For the first time in years, he felt a surge of genuine curiosity.

"And you think your poverty is a shield?"

"It is a sanctuary," the man replied. "In this room, I am the master of my own lack. In their paradise, I would be a slave to their abundance."

Elias felt the weight of the pistol in his hand. He had been paid to remove the anomalies, to smooth the path for the new world. He looked at the man—a man who had found a strange, terrifying freedom in the gutter.

The shot was quick. The silence that followed was absolute. As Elias left the building, he looked up at the shimmering ships in the sky. They looked like giant, silver coins, and for the first time, he wondered who was actually spending them.
