The Gilded Rot

The Blackwood Manor was a masterpiece of Gothic excess, a sprawling maze of velvet curtains, gold-leafed ceilings, and a silence that felt heavy, like wet earth. Clara had been brought there as a companion to the matriarch, but she soon realized that the manor was not a home; it was a gilded cage.

The Blackwoods were legendary for their beauty and their longevity. No one in the family ever seemed to age. They moved with a fluid, eerie grace, their skin as pale as moonlight.

Clara's fascination turned to horror when she discovered the "Sun Room." In the center of the room was a pulsing, iridescent mass of flesh and light—the Origin. It was a cosmic parasite, an entity from a dimension of pure hunger.

The Blackwoods didn't possess the entity; they were its hosts. The parasite provided them with eternal youth and beauty, but in exchange, it fed on their sanity. One by one, the family members were losing their minds, their personalities dissolving into a singular, hive-mind hunger.

Clara found the journals of the previous companions. All of them had tried to leave, and all of them had "disappeared." They hadn't been killed; they had been absorbed into the parasite to keep the Blackwoods beautiful.

As Clara spent more time in the house, she felt the pull. She began to see colors that didn't exist and hear music that sounded like screaming. She realized that the parasite was now targeting her.

She tried to destroy the entity using a caustic chemical she had brewed in the cellar. But as the acid hit the flesh, the entity didn't die. It evolved.

The manor began to transform. The gold leaf turned into glistening scales; the velvet curtains became membranes of skin. The house was no longer a building; it was the body of the parasite, and Clara was inside its stomach.

She saw the Blackwoods around her, their faces melting into beautiful, horrific masks of iridescent flesh. They weren't screaming; they were singing.

"Join us, Clara," they whispered in a thousand voices. "Why be a fragile human when you can be an eternal masterpiece?"

Clara fought, but the beauty was overwhelming. The horror was so exquisite that she found herself wanting to surrender. She felt her own identity slipping away, replaced by a cold, shimmering void.

In the end, she didn't fight the absorption. She stepped into the iridescent mass, her last thought a terrifying realization: she had never hated the monster. She had always wanted to be a part of it.

The manor fell silent once more, more beautiful and more terrible than ever before.
