The Last Witness

I live in the basement of a brownstone in Upper East Side, and I am the most powerful man in New York.

My power is not the power of command, but the power of observation. I am fifty years old, and I am the only adult left in a city of children. I don't know why I survived. Perhaps it was the lead lining of the bunker I was in during the Great Silence, or perhaps the universe simply has a cruel sense of humor.

I have a network of cameras—hundreds of them, salvaged from the city's security systems. I spend my days in a dim room, watching the monitors. I watch the "Kingdom of the Clouds," the society the children have built in the penthouses. I watch them wear silk robes and eat canned peaches from silver platters. I watch them play at being kings and queens.

It is a fascinating, terrifying experiment.

I see the way they mimic the adults. They have established a parliament, a court of law, and a tax system based on the trade of batteries and chocolate. They think they are creating a new, better world. But from my screens, I can see the patterns emerging—the same patterns of greed, the same patterns of exclusion, the same patterns of violence.

I see the "Shadow-War" being fought in the alleys, where children kill each other over a single working flashlight. I see the way the "High-Born" treat the "Grounders" with a casual cruelty that would make a Victorian landlord blush.

I possess the "Master Key"—a digital override that could restart the city's main power grid and communication systems. With one keystroke, I could bring the lights back to Manhattan. I could announce my existence and become the father, the teacher, the god of this new world.

But I don't.

Every time I reach for the key, I remember the world that was. I remember the wars, the pollution, the systemic hatred, and the crushing weight of adult expectations. I look at the children and I see a flicker of something that we lost long ago: a genuine, raw curiosity.

Yes, they are cruel. Yes, they are chaotic. But they are *honest* in their cruelty. They aren't hiding their violence behind diplomacy or laws.

One afternoon, I saw a girl through Camera 42. She was about ten years old, sitting on the edge of a rooftop, looking at the sunset. She wasn't playing a game. She wasn't collecting an artifact. She was just... looking. She looked so profoundly lonely that for a moment, I forgot I was a ghost.

I wanted to go to her. I wanted to tell her that she wasn't alone, that there was someone who remembered what it was like to be a child.

But then I saw her smile. She had found a small, stubborn weed growing through a crack in the concrete. She touched it with a tenderness that I hadn't seen in twenty years.

I pulled my hand away from the Master Key.

I realized that if I returned, I would bring the "Adult World" back with me. I would bring the rules, the labels, the boundaries, and the boredom. I would kill the only thing that made this new, terrifying world worth watching.

I leaned back in my chair and watched the monitor. The girl stayed on the roof until the stars came out. I stayed in the basement, the last witness to a world that was finally, beautifully, free of me.
