The Last Observer

Entry 1: Dr. Viktor Petrov first ran the quantum observer model on his computer at the Atacama Large Millimeter Array in Chile on a Tuesday in March, 2031. The result filled the screen. He checked his work. The result was the same.

The universe requires an observer to exist. Not metaphorically. Literally. Without a conscious mind to measure it, the universe collapses into probability waves that never resolve into reality. This was not philosophy. This was quantum mechanics, derived from equations that Viktor had verified three times.

Entry 7: The number of conscious observers in the universe was declining. Not slowly. Accelerating. War, disease, environmental collapse, depression, isolation, the slow erosion of meaning in a world that valued efficiency over understanding. Human consciousness was being extinguished faster than new minds were born.

Entry 13: When the last conscious observer died, the universe itself would cease to exist. Not metaphorically. The fabric of spacetime would unravel. Without an observer to collapse the wave function, reality would dissolve into pure probability, a cloud of possibilities that would never become actual.

Entry 19: Viktor tried to publish his findings. The scientific community dismissed him as a crackpot. His colleagues at ALMA requested a psychiatric evaluation. He was suspended. He sat in his desert housing and ran the numbers again. The result was the same.

He calculated the date. The last conscious observer would die in approximately forty-seven years.

Entry 25: His own probability of being the last observer was thirty-four percent. One in three. He sat in the Atacama desert and looked at the stars and laughed until he cried. The stars were not real. They were unresolved probabilities, waiting for an observer who might never come.

Entry 31: Dr. Anna Lindqvist, his colleague, requested his psychiatric evaluation. He did not blame her. He understood. But he also knew she was wrong. She thought he was depressed. He was not depressed. He was correct.

Entry 37: He traveled to Antarctica to run a private experiment. He set up detectors to measure whether the universe exists when no one is watching. The data was inconclusive. Or it was perfectly conclusive. He could not tell the difference anymore.

Entry 43: He is old now. The calculations have not changed. He sits in a nursing home in Santiago, Chile, in a room with white walls and a window that looks east. He looks at the stars through the window. He knows what they are: unresolved probabilities. Waiting for an observer who may never come.

Entry 47: He closes his eyes. The stars flicker.
