The Fallen Pillar

The wind howled through the colonnades of Rome, carrying the scent of smoke and old blood. Aurelius, a senator of the Old Republic, stood on the balcony of his villa, watching the horizon. The barbarian hordes were not a surprise; they were a mathematical inevitability. He had seen the numbers—the declining birth rates, the inflation of the currency, the erosion of the civic virtue. Rome was not being conquered; it was evaporating.

Aurelius had spent his final years building the "Library of the West." He had gathered the last remaining scrolls of Plato, Aristotle, and the great poets. He believed that while the city would fall, the mind of the West must survive. The Library was his Foundation, a seed of reason planted in the soil of a dying empire.

"We are the bridge," he told his young pupils. "We carry the torch across the abyss so that the next world does not have to start in the dark."

As the first fires appeared on the outskirts of the city, the Library became a sanctuary. Scholars from across the empire flocked to Aurelius, bringing with them the last fragments of lost knowledge. For a few weeks, there was a feverish energy of preservation. They worked by candlelight, copying texts with a desperation that bordered on madness.

Then the breach happened. The barbarians didn't enter the city with a roar, but with a slow, methodical hunger. They didn't care for the scrolls; they cared for the gold in the bindings.

But the real tragedy came from within. As the food ran out and the panic set in, the citizens of Rome turned on the Library. They didn't see a sanctuary of reason; they saw a hoard of useless paper. They believed that if they burned the books, the smoke would appease the gods or, at the very least, provide warmth for one more night.

Aurelius stood at the doors of the library, his arms spread wide, blocking the way. He was a frail old man against a tide of starving people.

"These are not books!" he screamed. "This is your memory! If you burn this, you will forget who you are!"

A stone hit him in the temple, and he fell. As he lay on the cold marble, he watched the first torch hit the curtains. The scrolls curled and blackened, the wisdom of a thousand years turning into grey ash that floated up into the indifferent Roman sky.

Aurelius closed his eyes. He realized that the bridge had collapsed, and the torch had gone out. The abyss had won.
