The Last Cigarette

Act I: The Grey Horizon The town of Oakhaven was a place where hope went to die and the factories breathed rust. Leo sat on the porch of a trailer that smelled of damp carpets and old grease, smoking a cigarette that tasted like burnt plastic. He was fifty-two, with a cough that sounded like gravel in a blender and a heart that had stopped feeling anything since the mills closed in '98. He spent his days watching the sky. For the past year, the stars had been disappearing. Not all of them, just a few every night, as if some celestial eraser was slowly cleaning the slate of the universe.

Act II: The Quiet Panic At first, the government called it "atmospheric interference." Then they called it "optical anomalies." But in the bars of Oakhaven, the men knew the truth. They didn't have telescopes or degrees, but they had the silence. The nights were becoming too quiet. The birds had stopped migrating; the dogs wouldn't stop howling at the empty patches of sky. Leo and his friends—a broken ex-cop and a drunk priest—spent their evenings drinking cheap bourbon and betting on which constellation would vanish next. There was no panic, only a profound, heavy boredom. They were too tired to be afraid.

Act III: The Final Constellation The night the North Star vanished, the world finally noticed. The cities erupted in riots, the religions declared the end times, and the scientists began to scream into their microphones. But in Oakhaven, Leo just lit another cigarette. He looked at his friends and realized that for the first time in decades, they were actually talking to each other. They weren't talking about the mills or the debts; they were talking about the smell of their mothers' cooking, the feeling of a first kiss, and the way the light used to hit the river in July. The disappearance of the universe had stripped away everything but the raw, honest core of their existence.

Act IV: The Great Dark As the last few stars flickered and died, the sky became a perfect, velvet black. The world didn't end with a bang or a flash; it just faded into a soft, absolute darkness. Leo felt the cold creeping into his bones, but he didn't move. He held the hand of the ex-cop and the priest, three broken men in a broken town, sharing a final, glowing ember of a cigarette. They didn't pray for salvation; they just sat in the dark, listening to the sound of their own breathing, grateful for the small, unimportant things that had made the long, grey journey worth it. Then, the light of the cigarette went out, and the silence became complete.
