Sample 08: The Cosmic Joke

The rain in New York didn't fall; it assaulted. It was a cold, relentless drizzle that turned the neon signs of Times Square into smeared watercolors of red and blue. I sat in my office, the kind of place where the dust had its own zip code and the only thing working was the leak in the ceiling.

My name is Elias Thorne, and I specialize in finding things that don't want to be found. Usually, it's a cheating spouse or a missing ledger. But three weeks ago, a client walked in who didn't have a name, only a briefcase full of unmarked bills and a look of absolute terror.

"Find the Zero Point," he had told me. "And for God's sake, don't look inside."

The Zero Point turned out to be a piece of hardware the size of a toaster, stolen from a government lab that didn't officially exist. It was a "Cosmic Auditor," a device that could calculate the exact probability of any event in the universe.

I spent a week running the numbers. I started with the small stuff—winning lottery numbers, the exact moment my landlord would come for the rent. Then, I got ambitious. I asked the machine for the "Ultimate Outcome of the Human Species."

The machine didn't hesitate. It printed out a single sheet of paper.

"Outcome: Accidental Erasure."

I stared at the page. "Accidental?" I whispered. "We're not being judged? We're not being harvested? We're just... a mistake?"

The machine then provided the details. The end of the world wasn't going to be a war of the worlds or a divine judgment. It was going to be a clerical error. A junior technician in a higher-dimensional bureaucracy was going to accidentally delete the "Sol-3" folder while trying to clear some cache space.

That was the joke. The entire history of humanity—the Pyramids, the Renaissance, the moon landing, my own miserable career—was all just a temporary file in some cosmic intern's directory.

I spent the next few days in a state of manic laughter. I stopped paying my rent. I drank a bottle of cheap bourbon and watched the city pulse with a frantic, meaningless energy. I saw the people in the streets, rushing to their jobs, fighting for their promotions, falling in love, all of them acting as if their lives had a plot.

"You're all just footnotes in a deleted document!" I wanted to scream at them.

The night it happened, I was sitting in a diner, eating a slice of lukewarm cherry pie. I looked at the clock on the wall. 11:59 PM.

I didn't feel fear. I felt a strange, liberating sense of relief. If nothing mattered, then the failure of my life was not a tragedy; it was a punchline.

At exactly midnight, the world didn't explode. It just... blinked.

I saw a giant, translucent cursor appear in the sky, hovering over the city. I saw a "Confirm Delete?" dialogue box the size of the atmosphere.

I took a final bite of the pie, leaned back in my booth, and gave the universe a middle finger.

"Wrong folder, kid," I whispered.

Then, the cursor clicked "Yes," and the screen went black.
