The Constant Collapse

Noah lived in the era of the Shiver. It had started as a localized anomaly in a laboratory in Zurich, but within a decade, the "Quantum Drift" had become a global plague. The fundamental constants of the universe—the speed of light, the Planck constant, the gravitational constant—had begun to drift.

The world was no longer a place of certainty. In some cities, gravity would suddenly invert, sending cars and people screaming into a violet sky. In others, time would loop in jagged fragments, forcing people to relive the same three seconds of a car crash for a century.

Noah was one of the last physicists capable of measuring the drift. He lived in a reinforced bunker, surrounded by analog clocks and mechanical scales, the only tools that still functioned when the digital world dissolved into noise.

"The universe is unravelling," Noah wrote in his final log. "The weave is coming apart, and we are the loose threads."

He spent his final years attempting to create a "Constant Anchor," a device that could lock the physical laws of a small area into a permanent state. He succeeded once, creating a ten-meter sphere of absolute stability. Inside that sphere, a flower could bloom, and a heart could beat with a steady rhythm.

But the Anchor required a sacrifice. To maintain the stability of the sphere, the device had to feed on the observer's own physical consistency.

Noah watched as his own body began to drift. First, his skin became translucent, then his bones turned into a liquid that flowed upward. He was becoming a ghost of probability, a smudge of existence in a world of shifting laws.

In his final hour, Noah stepped into the Anchor. He felt the sudden, jarring return of certainty. For a moment, he was solid. He was a man again. He looked at the flower in the center of the room—a simple red rose—and felt a surge of agonizing love for the simple, boring stability of a world that just worked.

Then, the Anchor failed.

The drift hit him with the force of a supernova. Noah felt his consciousness split into a billion different versions of himself, each experiencing a different version of physics. In one, he was a cloud of gas; in another, a single, infinite line of light; in a third, a scream that lasted for a million years.

As the last fragment of his identity dissolved, Noah realized the terrifying truth: the collapse wasn't an accident. The universe was simply resetting its parameters, and humanity was a legacy system that was no longer supported.

He vanished into the noise, a final, flickering variable in an equation that had finally reached zero.
