The Grand Farce

The Caldwell estate in Georgia was a masterpiece of decay. The white pillars were peeling like sunburnt skin, and the sprawling gardens had been reclaimed by kudzu and madness. The family had once been the kings of cotton, but now they were merely the curators of a graveyard.

Julian Caldwell, the last of the line, spent his days in the library, obsessing over the journals of his great-grandfather, a disgraced physicist who claimed to have found the "Key to the Infinite."

Julian didn't care about the money he didn't have; he cared about the glory. He spent the last of the family's silver and sold the remaining livestock to build the "Aether-Engine" in the old carriage house. He envisioned a moment of transcendental power—a sphere of pure energy that would announce the return of the Caldwells to the world.

He invited the town's remaining gentry to the unveiling. They came out of a mixture of pity and curiosity, dressed in their fading finery, sipping lukewarm lemonade under the oppressive Southern sun.

"Behold," Julian proclaimed, his voice trembling with a manic intensity, "the end of scarcity! The birth of a new era!"

He pulled the lever.

The machine groaned. The copper pipes shrieked. A massive surge of electricity tore through the carriage house, blowing out every window in the estate. The crowd gasped, shielding their eyes from a blinding flash of gold.

And then, the sound happened. A soft, wet *pop*.

From the center of the machine emerged a sphere. It was perfectly round, shimmering with a dozen iridescent colors, and about the size of a beach ball. It floated gently in the air, bobbing up and down with a rhythmic, almost playful grace.

It looked exactly like a giant soap bubble.

The crowd stared. Julian stared. The sphere drifted toward the town mayor, touched his nose with a tiny, wet *splat*, and then simply vanished, leaving behind a small smudge of soapy water and the faint scent of lavender.

The silence that followed was the loudest thing Julian had ever heard. Then, a single laugh broke out—a sharp, jagged sound from the back of the crowd. Within seconds, the entire assembly was howling with laughter.

Julian stood frozen, his "Key to the Infinite" having produced nothing more than a momentary piece of bath-time art. He looked at the empty space where his glory should have been and felt a sudden, profound sense of relief.

The burden of being a genius was gone. He was now just another eccentric in a dying house, and for the first time in his life, he found that he quite liked the taste of a joke.
