The View from the Shadow

Adrian Ross did not walk; he glided. He moved through the glass corridors of the hedge fund with a predatory grace, his presence commanding a silence that was both respectful and terrified. To the world, Adrian was the Oracle of Wall Street, the man who could see the invisible currents of global capital and ride them to a billion-dollar profit.

I have been Adrian's assistant for three years. My job is to be the invisible gear in his perfect machine. I schedule his calls, I filter his emails, and I memorize the exact temperature he likes his espresso. I am the one who sees the man behind the mask.

The world sees the Oracle. I see the tremor in his left hand when the markets dip by a fraction of a percent.

I see the way he stares at the city skyline from his office, not with pride, but with a look of profound, crushing boredom. I see the piles of antidepressants hidden in the bottom drawer of his mahogany desk, tucked away beneath the gold-embossed stationery.

One Tuesday, Adrian called me into his office. He didn't look at me. He was staring at a digital map of the world, the lines of capital flowing like glowing veins across the continents.

"Do you ever feel it, Sarah?" he asked, his voice a dry whisper.

"Feel what, Mr. Ross?"

"The weight of the nothingness," he said. "I can move a billion dollars with a click. I can crash a currency in a different time zone before I finish my lunch. And yet, I cannot remember the last time I felt a single genuine emotion that wasn't tied to a profit margin."

He finally looked at me. His eyes were like two pieces of cold flint.

"I have optimized my life for efficiency," he continued. "I have removed every friction, every unplanned variable, every messy human impulse. And in doing so, I have optimized myself out of existence."

He turned back to the map. "I am the most powerful man in this building, and I am the only one here who is truly dead."

I didn't know what to say. I just stood there, holding his schedule for the next week, feeling the immense distance between us. He was a god of capital, and I was a girl from Ohio who liked to read poetry on the subway.

As I left the office, I saw him reach for his espresso. His hand trembled again. He looked at the cup, then at the window, and for a split second, I saw a flash of absolute, raw terror in his eyes.

He quickly masked it with a smile and told me to call the CEO of Goldman Sachs.
