The Neon Grave

The rain in this city didn't wash anything away; it just moved the filth from one alley to another. I sat in my office, the neon sign outside flickering a rhythmic, sickly pink that matched the bruise on my ribs.

Eli was a wreck of a man. A former physicist who had traded his equations for a bottle of cheap rye. He came to me not with a case, but with a secret. He looked like a man who had seen the end of the world and found it boring.

"The stars are coming, Marlowe," he had rasped, his voice sounding like gravel in a blender. "And they aren't coming to save us. They're coming to audit us."

Eli spent his last three weeks in a haze of coughs and delirium, scratching a set of coordinates and a mathematical proof onto my mahogany desk with a rusted nail. He called it the "Saviour's Key." He told me that if the right frequency was broadcasted into the void, the auditors would see us as a civilization worth keeping.

He died on a Tuesday. I buried him in a potter's field under a sky that looked like a bruised plum. Then, I did what he asked. I used my contacts in the underground radio scene to blast the Key across every frequency in the hemisphere.

It worked. The void answered.

The "Auditors" descended in ships of floating mercury. They didn't come with fire; they came with gifts. They gave us the cure for cancer, the secret to infinite energy, and the ability to fold space. They called us "The Chosen."

For ten years, Earth was a paradise. We lived in floating cities of glass and light. We forgot about the rain, the filth, and the men like Eli.

But the gifts had a price. The infinite energy required a "sink"—a place to dump the psychic waste of the process. And the "cure" for cancer simply shifted the mutation to the next generation.

By the eleventh year, the children were born without eyes, their skin translucent and weeping. The floating cities began to plummet, crashing into the ruins of the old world. We had the technology of gods, but we still had the hearts of scavengers. We used the alien tools to build better cages for each other.

I sat in my office again, the neon sign still flickering. The sky was no longer purple; it was a dead, static grey.

"Eli was right," I whispered, pouring the last of the rye. "The stars did come. And they found us exactly as we were."
