The Last Seed

The world did not end with a bang, but with a long, slow hiss. The Great Desiccation had taken a century. First, the rainforests vanished, then the rivers, and finally, the clouds. The atmosphere had become a sterile void, a transparent ceiling that let the sun scorch the earth into a single, global desert.

Elias was the last farmer.

He lived in a pressurized dome, a relic of the Old World, surrounded by a landscape of white salt and black basalt. Inside the dome, he maintained a single, small plot of soil—the last fertile earth on the planet.

For twenty years, Elias had lived a life of monastic precision. He recycled every drop of moisture from his own breath and sweat. He filtered the air with obsessive care. His entire existence was dedicated to a single goal: the germination of the Last Seed.

The seed was a genetic marvel, a hybrid designed to survive in the harshest conditions. It was the final hope of a dying species, a biological archive of everything that had once been green.

Elias treated the seed like a god. He spoke to it, sang to it, and watched it under a microscope with a devotion that bordered on madness. He knew that if the seed failed, the concept of 'life' would become a historical footnote.

The drought outside the dome was absolute. The oceans had evaporated, leaving behind salt flats that stretched for thousands of miles. The wind carried the pulverized remains of cities, a grey grit that eroded the dome's shielding.

One morning, the alarms screamed. A micro-meteorite had punctured the dome's primary seal.

Elias scrambled to the breach, his hands shaking. He managed to patch the hole with emergency sealant, but the damage was done. The internal pressure had dropped, and the humidity—the fragile, artificial moisture that kept the soil alive—was leaking into the void.

He rushed to the plot. The soil was turning grey. The moisture was vanishing.

He had one option: the Emergency Reservoir. It was a small tank of pure water, reserved for the final moment of germination. But the tank was leaking too.

Elias didn't hesitate. He didn't try to fix the tank. Instead, he lay down on the soil and opened his veins.

He poured his own blood, the only remaining liquid in the room, into the parched earth. He watched as the dark red fluid soaked into the grey dust, a visceral, biological sacrifice. He gave everything—his strength, his heat, his very life—to provide a few milliliters of moisture to the seed.

As his vision faded, he saw it. A tiny, pale green shoot, no larger than a needle, breaking through the surface of the soil.

Elias smiled. He had succeeded.

But as he breathed his last, a second meteorite struck the dome, shattering it completely. The sterile, scorching wind of the wasteland rushed in, a wall of heat and salt.

The tiny green shoot lasted for three seconds. It shriveled, turned black, and vanished into the dust.

The last seed had sprouted, and the last seed had died. The world was finally, perfectly, dry.
