The Committee of Extinction

The mansion of Blackwood Manor was a sprawling, rotting carcass of a house, its Gothic spires leaning precariously over a landscape of grey marshes and skeletal trees. Inside, the air was thick with the smell of damp velvet and ancient dust.

In the Great Hall, beneath a chandelier that had lost half its crystals, sat the Committee of Extinction.

There were five of them. They were the last remnants of the Solar Hegemony, an empire that had once spanned a thousand stars and now consisted of five elderly, grotesque figures in moth-eaten silk robes.

"I move that we begin the session," wheezed Chairman Thorne, a man whose skin looked like wet parchment stretched over a skull. He paused to cough, a wet, rattling sound that echoed through the silent hall.

"But we haven't finished the tea," protested Lady Elara, whose face was a map of deep wrinkles and faded rouge. She delicately sipped from a porcelain cup that was chipped at the rim. "It would be uncouth to discuss the end of all things without proper refreshment."

The Committee was meeting to decide the "Aesthetics of the End." The universe was folding in on itself—a slow, inevitable collapse that had already erased the outer rim. In a few hours, Blackwood Manor and the planet it sat upon would be compressed into a single, infinitesimal point.

"The question," Thorne continued, ignoring the tea, "is whether we should go out with a bang or a whimper. I propose a final, grand broadcast—a symphony of all our greatest achievements, beamed into the void as a testament to our glory."

"Too ostentatious," sneered Lord Vane, a man so thin he looked like a shadow that had forgotten how to attach itself to a body. "The universe is a cold, indifferent place. A symphony would be a plea for attention. I suggest a dignified silence. A quiet exit, like a candle being blown out in a dark room."

"Oh, you've always been such a bore, Vane," Elara tittered. "I think we should leave a joke. A final, biting satire about the absurdity of existence. Something that would make the void laugh, if it had a mouth."

They spent the next three hours bickering. They argued about the font of the final message, the timing of the broadcast, and whether the tea was sufficiently steeped. They spoke of the fall of empires and the death of stars with the same casual indifference they used to discuss the quality of the biscuits.

Outside, the sky was turning a bruised, necrotic purple. The horizon was literally curving upward, the laws of geometry failing as the collapse drew near. The marshes were beginning to float, the skeletal trees drifting upward like slow-motion confetti.

"I still maintain," Thorne said, his voice growing faint, "that a symphony is the only appropriate—"

He stopped. A single, crystalline shard of the void pierced through the roof of the Great Hall, slicing through the chandelier and the mahogany table in a fraction of a second.

Lady Elara looked at her broken teacup. A small, genuine look of annoyance crossed her face.

"Well," she sighed, "that was remarkably rude."

Then, the room folded. The Committee, the tea, and the rotting glory of Blackwood Manor vanished into a point of zero volume, leaving behind nothing but a brief, absurd echo of a laugh that no one was left to hear.
