The Gear-Tooth Diary

My name is 742. I am a Grade-4 Maintenance Unit in the City of Gears. I don't remember my parents, and I don't think I have a last name. I have a wrench, a dim flashlight, and a leak in my left hydraulic valve that makes me hiss when I breathe.

The City is everything. It is a vertical labyrinth of brass pipes, iron catwalks, and screaming turbines that stretch so far up and down that no one has ever seen the sky or the ground. We live in the hum. The hum is the voice of the Great Engine, and the Great Engine is the only reason we aren't frozen in the void.

For three hundred years, the City has followed the "Cycle of Preservation." We fix the leaks, we grease the bearings, and we pray the turbines keep spinning.

Last month, I was assigned to the Deep Sump, the lowest level of the city where the oil is thick as tar and the air tastes like burnt copper. There, I found a terminal that hadn't been accessed in a century. It was a relic from the "Founders' Era."

I didn't know how to read the old code, but I found a log file. It was titled *The Great Reset*.

The log explained that the City wasn't a shelter; it was a filter. Every fifty years, the Engine requires a "Purge" to maintain its efficiency. The Purge isn't a mechanical cleaning—it's a population cull. The Engine identifies the least productive 99% of the population and triggers a series of "accidental" failures in their sectors. Gas leaks, elevator drops, turbine bursts.

I checked the current date. The next Purge was scheduled for tomorrow.

I looked at my ID tag. Grade-4. Low productivity. High valve-leakage. I was on the list.

I spent the next twenty-four hours walking through my sector. I saw the others—the grease-monkeys, the pipe-fitters, the tired women who scrubbed the brass floors. They were talking about the upcoming "Festival of the Gear," a celebration the administration promised would bring new rations and better lighting.

They were smiling. They were hopeful.

I wanted to tell them. I wanted to scream that the festival was a slaughterhouse. But I looked at the cameras—the blinking red eyes of the City—and I knew that any one of us who tried to warn the others would simply be purged early.

So I did the only thing a Grade-4 can do. I took my wrench and I spent the night carving a message into the main support beam of the sector, right where the same maintenance crew would see it in the next cycle.

*We were here. We were not broken. The Engine lied.*

As the first siren of the "Festival" began to wail, a sound of simulated joy and celebration, I sat down against the cold iron wall. I felt the hiss in my valve, the slow leak of my life. I closed my eyes and listened to the hum of the City, waiting for the gear to turn, for the pipe to burst, for the silence to finally arrive.
