The Hunter's Ledger

The rain in Los Angeles didn't wash anything away; it just moved the grime from one alley to another. Detective Miller sat in his car, the neon sign of a nearby diner flickering in his rearview mirror like a dying heart. He took a drag of his cigarette, the smoke curling around the dashboard where a small, obsidian device sat humming.

The device was a "Marker." It didn't transmit; it tagged.

Ten years ago, the "Sovereign Group" had cracked the code of the void. They found that the universe wasn't a mystery to be solved, but a game of hide-and-seek played by monsters. The rule was simple: the first one to find the other won. The Sovereign Group decided they were tired of hiding.

"You're thinking too much, Miller," the Director's voice crackled over the radio. "Just plant the Marker in the sector and walk away. The void will do the rest."

Miller looked at the sector map. He wasn't looking for a signal; he was creating a target. The Marker emitted a specific, high-frequency gravitational ripple—a "dinner bell" for any apex predator lurking in the dark. By tagging a distant, unsuspecting star system, the Sovereign Group could lure a predator toward a rival civilization, effectively using the universe's own cruelty as a weapon.

He had spent three years as the Group's launderer, cleaning up the "accidents" that happened when a Marker was placed. He had seen the footage of worlds blinking out of existence—not with a bang, but with a sudden, clinical erasure.

"We're not the victims anymore," the Director had told him during his initiation. "We're the ones who decide who gets eaten."

But the cost was an invisible rot. Miller could feel it in his bones, a coldness that no amount of cheap bourbon could numb. He had become a cartographer of genocide. Every time he placed a Marker, he felt a piece of his own humanity detach and float away into the black.

Tonight, the target was different. The coordinates pointed to a system that the Sovereign Group claimed was "empty," but Miller's own research suggested it housed a civilization of poets and mathematicians, a people who still believed the universe was a place of wonder.

He stepped out of the car, the obsidian device heavy in his hand. He looked up at the smog-choked sky, imagining the predators waiting in the silence, their hunger as old as time.

"One more tag," he whispered to himself. "One more world for the void."

He activated the device. A single, invisible pulse rippled outward, crossing light-years in a heartbeat. Somewhere, in the deep dark, something had just woken up. And it was heading straight for the target.

Miller walked back to his car, his reflection in the window looking like a stranger. He had saved his own skin, secured his pension, and ensured the Sovereign Group's dominance. He was a success.

As he drove away, he didn't notice the small, obsidian hum starting in his own pocket. The Director had decided that Miller knew too much. The launderer had just become the laundry.
