The Last Handshake

The station was called "The Needle," a tiny, sterile sliver of titanium floating in the dead center of the Great Void. There were no stars here, only a thick, oppressive blackness that seemed to swallow the very idea of light.

Two beings sat across from each other at a bolted-down metal table.

One was a spindly creature of translucent glass and shifting colors, a survivor from the crystalline spires of the Andromeda fringe. The other was a heavy, armored thing of chitin and steam, the last remnant of a warrior-caste from the galactic core.

Their civilizations had spent ten thousand years trying to erase each other from the map. They had burned stars, collapsed wormholes, and turned entire planetary systems into graveyards. They had been the two greatest enemies in the history of the universe.

Now, they were the only two things left.

The universe was collapsing. The Great Crunch was not a sudden event, but a slow, agonizing contraction. The galaxies had already merged into a single, chaotic swarm, and that swarm was now shrinking toward a final, infinite point.

"My people called you 'The Blight,'" the glass creature whispered, its voice a series of harmonic chimes.

"And mine called you 'The Fragile,'" the armored creature replied, its voice a low, grinding rumble.

They sat in silence for a long time. There was no point in fighting now. There were no more worlds to conquer, no more ideologies to defend. There was only the cold, encroaching dark.

The glass creature reached out a shimmering, translucent hand.

The armored creature looked at the hand. It thought of the billions of lives lost in the wars, the scorched earth, the endless hatred. It thought of the sheer, absurd waste of it all.

Slowly, with a grinding of metal plates, the armored creature reached out and grasped the glass hand.

The touch was strange—a mixture of freezing cold and searing heat. But for the first time in eons, both felt a flicker of something that wasn't hate. It was a recognition. A shared understanding that in the face of the absolute void, the only thing that mattered was that they were not alone in their ending.

They didn't speak. They didn't apologize. They simply held on to each other as the walls of the station began to buckle.

As the singularity finally claimed them, crushing their bodies and their memories into a single, dimensionless point, the last thing that existed in the universe was the feeling of a handshake.
