The Absurd Ceremony

The community of Aethelgard was a triumph of logic. Every house was a white cube, every lawn was trimmed to exactly two inches, and every emotion was categorized by the Central Institute of Harmony. Oliver and Sophie were the perfect couple—until they weren't.

Oliver's father, Dr. Aris, was the Chief Architect of the Institute. He didn't believe in "love"; he believed in "interpersonal synchronization." When he noticed a slight deviation in Oliver and Sophie's synchronization patterns—a lingering gaze, a touch that lasted 0.4 seconds too long—he decided that their relationship had become a "cognitive error."

He didn't forbid their love. Instead, he invited them to the "Ceremony of Clarification."

The ceremony took place in a room of blinding white light. Dr. Aris stood before them with a holographic projector, displaying a series of complex graphs. He showed them the "True Vector" of their compatibility, proving through a series of recursive algorithms that their attraction was actually a manifestation of shared childhood traumas and a mutual fear of loneliness.

"You see," Dr. Aris explained, his voice a soothing, clinical drone, "you do not love each other. You are simply using each other as mirrors to reflect your own deficiencies. Your 'passion' is merely a chemical glitch caused by a lack of proper synchronization."

For three hours, he dismantled their relationship with the precision of a watchmaker. He analyzed their arguments, their laughter, and their silence, turning every intimate moment into a data point. He proved that their shared interests were coincidental and their emotional bond was a statistical anomaly.

By the end of the ceremony, Oliver and Sophie looked at each other and felt... nothing. The logic was too perfect. The data was too clean. The "truth" had been presented with such overwhelming evidence that their feelings felt like clumsy, outdated delusions.

They shook hands and walked out of the room in opposite directions. There was no sadness, no anger, only a profound sense of relief that they had been "cured" of their error.

Oliver returned to his white cube and began a new synchronization process with a woman who was a 98% match on the Institute's scale. He was happy, or rather, he was functioning at optimal efficiency.

Sometimes, in the middle of the night, he would remember a smell—the scent of rain on hot asphalt—and he would feel a sudden, inexplicable ache in his chest. He would immediately report the sensation to the Institute as a "residual glitch," and they would adjust his medication until the world was white and silent once again.
