The Eternal Decree

The city-state of Aethelgard was built on a foundation of absolute law and sacred geometry. Its white marble spires reached toward a sky that never seemed to change, and its citizens lived by a code that had not been altered for a thousand years. Helena, the High Priestess of the Eternal Flame, was the living embodiment of this code.

Her three sons, the princes of the blood, had committed an act of unspeakable hubris. In their quest for forbidden knowledge, they had breached the Sanctum of Silence, leading to a catastrophic surge of energy that had leveled a district of the city and claimed hundreds of lives.

The people demanded blood. The laws of Aethelgard were clear: a crime of this magnitude required a life for a life, and the blood of the perpetrator must be spilled upon the Altar of Atonement.

Helena stood before the High Council, her face a mask of divine indifference. She did not plead for her sons; she did not weep. She knew that the stability of the city depended on the perceived infallibility of the law.

"The law is the breath of the city," Helena declared, her voice echoing through the Great Hall. "If the breath is tainted, the city dies."

She chose her youngest son, the one who had been the most hesitant in their quest, to be the sacrifice. She did not do this out of a lack of love, but out of a love for the Order that sustained them all. She framed the sacrifice not as a punishment, but as a sacred duty—a way for the prince to become a guardian of the city's future.

The execution was a grand, solemn event. Thousands gathered in the plaza, their faces pale with awe and terror. As the blade fell, Helena did not look away. She watched the blood stain the white marble, seeing it not as a loss, but as a seal.

The city returned to its sterile peace. The two surviving princes grew into men of cold, efficient leadership, their hearts hardened by the memory of the altar. They ruled Aethelgard with a precision that was admired by all and loved by none.

Centuries later, the story of Helena's choice was carved into the walls of the Great Library. It became the central myth of the city—the story of the Mother who loved the Law more than her own flesh.

The citizens of Aethelgard continued to live in their perfect, white city, never realizing that the peace they enjoyed was built upon a foundation of a mother's silence and a brother's blood. The law remained absolute, but the soul of the city had become a hollow echo.
