The Time Loop Curse

Thomas Mercer stood on the porch of his Mississippi plantation, watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of blood and gold. It was the third time he had seen this sunset. The third time.

He did not know how it had begun. One day, he had been a successful astronomer, studying the stars from the observatory he had built on his property. The next day, he had smashed his star chart against the floor, and time had broken.

Now he was trapped in a loop. Every evening, he would watch the sunset. Every morning, he would wake up in the same bed, in the same house, in the same body. And every time, he would remember everything.

"Master Thomas?"

Thomas turned. It was James, his steward, a black man who had served his family for thirty years. James was looking at him with concern.

"Are you well, sir? You look troubled."

Thomas smiled. It was not a happy smile. "I'm fine, James. Just thinking."

"About the stars, sir?"

"Yes. About the stars."

Thomas had tried to explain the time loop to James, but his steward did not understand. How could he? The phenomenon was unique to Thomas. James was outside the loop, living the same day over and over without knowing it. Only Thomas remembered.

Only Thomas suffered.

Over the loops, Thomas had discovered something terrible. The time loop was not random. It was connected to the cosmic contraction he had predicted. The universe was contracting, and his observation of it had triggered a localized time reversal. He was caught in the eye of the storm, experiencing time backward while the rest of the world moved forward.

But with each loop, he was losing himself. Memories were fading. Identity was dissolving. Soon, he would forget who he was, where he came from, what he had done. He would become just another man on a Mississippi plantation, living the same day over and over without knowing it.

Just like James.

Just like everyone else.

Thomas went back to the observatory. He sat at his desk and began to write. He wrote everything he knew, everything he had experienced, everything he was afraid of forgetting. He wrote for hours, until his hand cramped and the ink ran dry.

Then he went back to the porch and watched the sunset.

It was beautiful. It was terrible. It was the only thing he had left.
