New York is a city of eight million people, and yet, it is the loneliest place on earth. I am a ghost in this city. I am the one who holds the coats, the one who pours the water, the one who is seen but never noticed. I am Sophie's assistant.

Sophie is a public relations miracle. She can turn a corporate disaster into a charity event and a scandal into a trend. She is precise, cold, and efficient. I have worked for her for three years, and in that time, I have learned that Sophie does not have friends; she has assets.

Mark was her only exception. He was an accountant, a man of numbers and quiet truths. When he was accused of embezzling millions from the firm, the city's media tore him apart. He was the perfect scapegoat—quiet, unassuming, and utterly alone.

The man behind the frame was CEO Gordon. Gordon was a predator in a Brioni suit, a man who viewed people as line items on a balance sheet. He didn't just want Mark in prison; he wanted him erased.

I watched Sophie from the corners of the room. I saw the way her jaw tightened when Gordon's name was mentioned. I saw the way she spent her nights staring at Mark's old photographs.

The plan was executed during the annual gala at the Met. The room was a sea of diamonds and fake smiles. Sophie wore a dress that looked like liquid moonlight. She approached Gordon not as a lover, but as a partner in a new, more lucrative venture.

I stood five feet away, holding her clutch. I saw the way she leaned in, the way she used a specific tone of voice that made Gordon feel like the only man in the room. She played on his greed, suggesting a loophole in the new tax laws that could save him millions.

Gordon, intoxicated by the champagne and his own perceived brilliance, grew careless. He brought out his encrypted tablet to show her the "real" numbers.

In that moment, Sophie didn't move. She didn't have to. I saw her subtly signal me. I stepped forward, pretending to offer a tray of hors d'oeuvres, and in a split second, I placed a small, wireless mirroring device on the underside of the table.

For the next ten minutes, every screen Gordon touched was mirrored to Sophie's phone. By the time the dessert course was served, Sophie had everything: the emails, the transfers, the proof of the frame-up.

Mark was cleared within forty-eight hours.

A week later, I saw Sophie and Mark together in a small cafe in Brooklyn. They weren't talking. They were just sitting in silence, looking at each other. There was a distance between them—a gap created by the trauma of the last few months.

Sophie looked up and saw me. For a second, our eyes met. I saw a flicker of something in her expression—not gratitude, not happiness, but a profound, crushing weariness. She had won the game, but she looked like she had lost everything.

I turned away and went back to my duties. In New York, the only thing more expensive than the rent is the cost of the truth.
