The Echo of the Endless Hall

The rain in this city doesn't wash anything away; it just moves the filth from one alley to another. I’m a ghost now, though I still remember the smell of cheap cigars and the taste of betrayal.

My name doesn't matter. In life, I was the man who cleaned up the messes for Big Sal, the king of the waterfront. I was the loyal dog, the one who took the fall when the cops got too close, the one who buried the bodies in the marshes of New Jersey.

I loved Sal. Not the way a man loves a friend, but the way a drowning man loves the hand that pulls him out of the water. He had given me a suit, a car, and a purpose. In return, I gave him my conscience.

The end came in a warehouse on Pier 14. Sal had decided I knew too much. The "loyalty" I had provided for fifteen years had become a liability. He didn't even have the decency to look me in the eye when he gave the order. One shot to the back of the head, and I was out of the game.

But here's the kicker: in this city, even death isn't an exit.

I woke up in the Endless Hall. It's a place of grey concrete and flickering fluorescent lights, stretching forever in both directions. There are no doors, no windows, and no one else. Just me and the echo of that final gunshot.

I spend my eternity walking. I walk for miles, and every few hours, I come across a mirror. When I look into it, I don't see a ghost; I see myself at the moment of the betrayal. I see the look of indifference on Sal's face. I feel the cold steel of the barrel against my neck.

And then, the loop resets.

I try to scream, but the Hall swallows the sound. I try to pray, but I forgot the words to any god who would listen to a man like me.

The horror isn't the death; it's the memory. I am forced to relive the exact second my loyalty was repaid with a bullet, over and over, for a billion years. There is no light at the end of the tunnel, no judge to tell me I've paid my debt. Just the cold, hard fact that I was a fool.

Sometimes, I imagine I see a door. I run toward it, my ghostly heart hammering in my chest, hoping for a way out—heaven, hell, it doesn't matter, as long as it's different. But as I reach for the handle, the door dissolves into smoke, and I find myself back at the start of the hall.

The gunshot echoes again.

"You were a good soldier," Sal's voice whispers in the wind.

And I realize that this is my true reward. The eternal preservation of my own stupidity.
