The Sisyphus Light

The island was not an island; it was a white, featureless void where the only thing that existed was the Furnace. Sasha had come here a lifetime ago, or perhaps yesterday—time had no meaning in the white. He had come for Ice, a woman whose memory was the only color left in his world.

The Old Man, a reflection of a future Sasha feared, had told him the truth: "The fire must be lit. If the fire dies, the memory of her dies. If the fire burns, she exists somewhere, in some version of the world."

Sasha's life became a ritual of absolute simplicity. Every morning, he hauled a single bucket of white ash to the mouth of the Furnace. He struck a match. He watched the flame take hold. He waited for the heat to bloom. Then, he slept.

He did this for decades. He did it with a devotion that was indistinguishable from madness. He imagined Ice's face in the embers, her voice in the hiss of the heat. He believed that each spark was a heartbeat, each flame a breath.

One day, the Old Man simply stopped breathing. He died in his sleep, leaving Sasha alone with the Furnace and the Great Book.

Sasha opened the book with trembling hands. He expected to find the coordinates of Ice's soul, or the secret to her return. Instead, he found that the pages were blank. Every single one of them. There were no stars, no coordinates, no Ice. There was only the white void and the furnace.

He sat in the silence, the heat of the fire warming his weathered skin. He realized that there was no world outside the void, no Ice to be saved, and no one to see the light he produced. The "cure" had been a fiction, a story told to make the labor bearable.

He looked at the match in his hand. He could let the fire go out. He could embrace the white silence and finally disappear.

But then, he remembered the feeling of the flame—the way it fought against the void, the way it asserted its existence against the nothingness. He realized that the act of lighting the fire was the only thing that made him real. The purpose wasn't in the result, but in the repetition.

Sasha struck the match. He fed the fire. He smiled into the void, finding a strange, quiet peace in the rhythm of the labor. He was the fireman of nothing, and in that nothingness, he was finally free.
