The Broken Mirror

Elinor Blythe did not resist when they took her to Haven House. This surprised everyone, including herself. She packed a small valise — two dresses, a nightgown, her journal, a copy of Tennyson that she had bought at a bookshop on Newbury Street for three shillings — and she kissed her husband Jonathan on the cheek and she said: "I will come back, you will see."

Jonathan's face did not change. It was the face of a man who has heard this before and knows that "see" in Elinor's mouth means something different than it does in other people's mouths. In Jonathan's mouth, "see" means "observe with the eyes." In Elinor's mouth, "see" means "understand with whatever faculty you have left, even if it is the one they say is broken."

The drive to the coast was silent. Elinor looked out the window at the New England landscape passing by — November fields, bare and brown, the kind of landscape that looks like a watercolor left out in the rain. She thought about her poetry. She had published three poems under the initials "E.B." in the Boston Literary Review. They had not been well reviewed. They had not been poorly reviewed either. They had been reviewed, which was, Elinor thought, the most honest thing a literary journal can do. To be neither praised nor condemned, simply assessed.

Haven House was on an island in the Gulf of Maine — small, rocky, accessible by a ferry that ran twice a day and only when the sea was not too rough. Elinor crossed the water on a Thursday morning. The ferryman did not look at her. He looked at Jonathan and said: "Sign here." And Jonathan signed, and Elinor stepped off the ferry, and she walked up a path lined with pine trees to a house that was not quite a house and not quite a hospital but something in between — a place where women came to be quiet.

She went upstairs to her room. It was small and white, with a window that looked out at the sea. The sea was grey and choppy and uninterested in her. She set her valise on
