The Black Diagnosis

Boston in November tastes like diesel and regret. Jack Moranne knew this because he had breathed it every day for three years — three years since the Navy discharged him with a paper that said he had served honorably and a face that said he had not.

He sat in his car outside the Sumner Tunnel, engine idling, and watched the toll booth glow yellow in the rain. Beyond the booth, the tunnel swallowed cars whole and spat them out on the other side into a world that felt slightly less real than the one you entered — neon signs reflected in wet asphalt, pedestrians with their collars up, the kind of city where everybody is going somewhere and nobody wants to be seen going there.

His phone had rung at midnight. A man's voice, smooth as motor oil: "Come to Meridian House. Find out what they did to her."

"Her" — Jack had said "Who?" and the voice had said: "You know who. Just come."

He had driven to Meridian House — a private institution on a small island in Boston Harbor, visible from the Sumner Tunnel as a dark smudge against the skyline, like a tooth that needs pulling. He had stood across the water and looked at it and felt something he could not name. Not curiosity. Not fear. Something older than both.

Now he pulled into the toll booth, handed over a dollar, and drove into the tunnel.

The island was closer than he expected. Not much bigger than a city block, but it had a hospital on it — a white building with tall windows, surrounded by a low wall and a garden that looked dead in the November cold. A single road connected it to the mainland. At the end of the road, a man waited under a flickering streetlight.

"Jack Moranne?" The man was tall, thin, and wore a coat that cost more than Jack's car. He had the kind of face that belongs to a man who is used to being believed. "I am Captain Voss. You have been expecting this call."

"I do not expect much of anything anymore," Jack said. "But I came. So talk."
