Julian Blackwood had not slept in three days.

Tommy O'Sullivan knew this because Julian's eyes were the colour of weak tea—washed out, translucent—and because his hands, when he lifted a coffee cup, had a fine tremor that made the porcelain click against the saucer like a metronome counting a very fast tempo.

"They're going to bury it, Tommy," Julian said. He was sitting on the edge of his bed in a Brooklyn walk-up that smelled of stale cigarettes and engine oil, his legs dangling over the edge because the chair had been replaced by a tower of engineering schematics. "The Supersonic program. They're going to bury it under classified and nobody will ever know what we almost built."

Tommy sat in the single armchair, his notepad on his knee. He was not taking notes. He never took notes during these conversations. He had learned, over eight months of visiting Julian, that Julian's best thoughts came when he thought nobody was listening.

"Who's 'they'?" Tommy asked.

Julian made a gesture that encompassed everything from Capitol Hill to Pentagon basement offices to the unnamed people who sat in rooms with no windows and decided what technology was safe for the world. "They. The people who look at a design for a civilian supersonic transport and see a missile delivery system."

"You designed it for both."

"I designed it for flight." His voice cracked on the last word, a hairline fracture in a voice that had been steady for thirty-three years. "I designed it so people could sit in a metal tube and go from New York to London in three hours. Not so some general could sit in a metal tube and drop a bomb on someone else's city in three hours."

Tommy put his notepad down. He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. He looked at his old friend, his roommate from four years ago at Michigan, the brilliant, broken man who had sold his mind to the government and discovered too late that the government does not buy minds—it consumes them.

"Julian."

"Don't. Don't give me the Tommy O'Sullivan look. I know that look. You're about to tell me to relax. To take a vacation. To come back to New York and write sports and stop caring about things I can't fix."

"Maybe I was going to say something else."

"Maybe." Julian looked at his hands. They were trembling harder now. "Maybe you were going to tell me that if I just let it go, it would all be fine."

Tommy stood up. He walked to the window and looked out at the Brooklyn street below—a row of stoops, a bodega with its fluorescent light on, a woman walking a small dog that barked at nothing. Ordinary things. Things that existed in a world where engineering designs did not determine whether nations lived or died.

"I was going to say that you're not responsible for what they do with your work," Tommy said.

"That's a nice thing to say. It's also a lie."

"You're not responsible for every use of the design. You're responsible for the design."

"Is that any better?"

Tommy did not answer. He had no answer.
