The Puppet's Pulse

The rain in the Lower East Side didn't wash anything away; it only smeared the grime into a more permanent stain. I lived in a room that smelled of damp cardboard and old grease, a space that was less a home and more a waiting room for the end.

My name is Kane. Or at least, that's the name the Corporation gave me. I remember a time when I had a different name, a different life, but those memories are like static on a broken television—flashes of green grass and a woman's laughter, quickly drowned out by the hum of the Neural Link.

The Link is a silver filament embedded in the base of my skull. It is the leash that connects me to the Central Hub. I can feel the Hub's presence as a constant, low-frequency vibration in my teeth. When the Hub wants me to move, my legs move. When it wants me to kill, my hand strikes. I am a passenger in my own skin.

I was an "Asset." My job was to eliminate "glitches" in the city's social fabric—people who had woken up, people who remembered the world before the Corporation.

I remember the first time I felt the friction. I was tasked with removing a former engineer who had discovered a flaw in the Hub's synchronization. As I held the knife to his throat, he looked at me—not with fear, but with a devastating pity.

"You're still in there, aren't you?" he whispered. "The little spark. The one they couldn't extinguish."

For a second, the Link flickered. I felt a surge of raw, unfiltered rage. I wanted to scream, to tear the silver filament from my neck, to kill the man in the high tower who held the remote. But the Hub corrected the anomaly. A surge of synthetic dopamine flooded my brain, and the rage vanished, replaced by a terrifying, empty peace.

I killed him. I always killed them.

But the glitches started happening more often. I would be walking down a neon-lit alley and suddenly remember the smell of rain on hot asphalt—not the chemical rain of the city, but real rain. I would see a child's toy in the gutter and feel a sudden, crushing weight of grief that didn't belong to me.

I began to fight the Link. It was a war of attrition. I would try to move my left hand while the Hub commanded my right. I would try to think of a word—*freedom*—over and over again, creating a loop of resistance that the Hub struggled to overwrite.

The Hub responded by increasing the dosage. My vision blurred. My emotions were flattened into a grey plateau. I became a ghost, a shell of a man, a puppet whose strings were made of electricity.

One night, I was ordered to eliminate a group of dissidents in a basement in Queens. As I entered the room, I saw a mirror. I looked at my reflection—the dead eyes, the pale skin, the silver glint at the neck.

I didn't see a man. I saw a tool.

In that moment, I found the loop. I focused all my will on a single, jagged memory of a small, red flower. I pushed that image into the Link, expanding it, amplifying it, turning it into a psychic scream.

The Hub shrieked. The feedback loop was instantaneous. For a heartbeat, the connection broke. I felt the wind on my face. I felt the cold of the room. I felt the absolute, terrifying weight of my own existence.

Then, the Hub rebooted. The surge was ten times stronger than before. It didn't just overwrite the memory; it cauterized the part of my brain that was capable of resisting.

I stood up. I looked at the dissidents. I felt nothing. No rage, no grief, no spark.

I did my job.
