The Hollow Peak

The city was a concrete throat, and Elias was the grit in its windpipe. In the 1940s, the metropolis was run by the Syndicate, a collection of men who traded in fear and silence. Elias had once been a contender, a prize-fighter with a style so erratic and violent that the commissions called it "unstable." They banned him, citing a psychological defect, but in reality, they were afraid of a man they couldn't predict.

Elias didn't fight the ban; he went underground. In the damp basements of the docks, he developed a training regimen that was less about boxing and more about survival. He fought in pits where the rules were nonexistent, learning to use every inch of his body as a weapon. He trained his mind to detach from pain, treating his own injuries as mere data. He became a ghost of the underworld, a fixer who could dismantle a man's life as easily as he could dismantle his ribs.

His ascent was a blood-soaked ladder. He didn't seek the Syndicate's approval; he sought their vulnerabilities. One by one, he replaced the lieutenants with men who owed him their lives. He played the factions against each other, a master of the cold game, until the night he walked into the penthouse of the Boss and didn't ask for a seat—he took the chair.

At the peak, Elias found the view was empty. He was the Emperor of the Concrete, the most feared man in the city. But the cost of the climb had been absolute. To ensure his security, he had eliminated every person who had ever known him before the blood. He had no friends, only assets; no love, only loyalty born of terror.

He spent his nights in the penthouse, staring at the rain-slicked streets below. He realized that power was not a destination, but a vacuum. The more he possessed, the less he felt. He had achieved the supreme position, but he had deleted the human being required to enjoy it.

One Tuesday morning, Elias didn't bother to lock his door. He sat in his chair, a glass of cheap bourbon in his hand, and waited. He knew the cycle. He had taught the city how to kill a king, and now he was simply waiting for the student to arrive. When the door finally opened and the muzzle of a gun appeared in the doorway, Elias didn't move. He smiled, for the first time in years, welcoming the only thing that felt real.
