The Ledger of Lost Things

From my vantage point in the Fourth Dimension, New York looks like a colony of frantic ants living on a piece of wet cardboard. My job is simple: I am a Junior Archivist for the Hegemony, and my task is to document the "Dissolution" of Sector 7-G.

The Dissolution is a standard procedure. A Void-Siphon is placed over a planetary hub, and the local matter is slowly converted into raw energy for the Hegemony's core. To the humans, it looks like a black hole is eating their sky. To me, it looks like a very slow, very boring vacuum cleaner.

I spent three weeks observing a particular human—a taxi driver named Leo. Leo was a fascinating specimen of insignificance. While the rest of the city was rioting or praying, Leo continued to drive his cab, picking up the last few passengers who were too terrified to walk.

"Where to, pal?" he'd ask, his voice a gravelly rasp, while a skyscraper three blocks away vanished into a silent, purple ripple.

I watched him take a young couple to the airport, knowing the airport had been erased an hour ago. I watched him buy a hot dog from a vendor who was already half-transparent. There was a stubborn, irrational dignity in his routine that didn't fit any of the Hegemony's behavioral models.

I began to deviate from my protocol. Instead of recording the structural collapse of the Empire State Building, I recorded the way Leo shared his last cigarette with a stray dog. I recorded the way he hummed an old jazz tune while the atmosphere began to thin. I found myself wanting to save him—not because he was important, but because he was the only thing in the city that didn't seem to be afraid of the void.

I wrote a formal request to my supervisor, arguing that Leo represented a "unique psychological anomaly" that deserved preservation in the Imperial Zoo. I spent four hours crafting the argument, using every bureaucratic loophole in the Hegemony's handbook.

The response came back in a millisecond: *Request Denied. Sector 7-G is scheduled for total conversion. Please cease wasting archival bandwidth on low-value biomass.*

I watched the Siphon expand. Leo's cab was the last thing to go. He didn't scream. He just pulled over, leaned back in his seat, and closed his eyes. I closed my ledger and marked the sector as "Complete." I felt a strange, flickering sensation in my chest—something the Hegemony would call a system error, but which I think was a tear.
