Entry 4,012: The coffee machine in Sector 4 has developed a personality. It refuses to brew espresso unless you compliment its chrome finish. The crew has started bringing it small gifts—bits of colorful wire, polished screws. We are currently in the middle of a galactic exodus, fleeing the collapse of our solar system, but the primary concern of the morning shift is the mood of a beverage dispenser.

I am the Archivist of the Chronos. My job is to document the 'Human Experience' during our transit to the New Dawn. It is a fascinating study in cognitive dissonance.

Entry 4,015: Today, we lost the secondary oxygen scrubber in the residential wing. Three hundred people are breathing air that tastes like wet cardboard. In response, the Social Committee has organized a 'Breath-Holding Competition' with a prize of one extra ration of synthetic chocolate. The winner is a man who has spent the last decade trying to invent a new type of hat.

The Chronos is a masterpiece of efficiency, a silver needle threading through the black. But the people inside are... glitchy.

Entry 4,020: I observed a group of engineers arguing for four hours about whether the void is 'dark' or 'transparent.' This happened while the hull was vibrating from a micro-meteorite shower that nearly breached the galley. They didn't stop arguing until the alarms went off, at which point they agreed that the noise was 'too distracting' and went back to sleep.

I find it comforting. The universe is a place of cold, mathematical cruelty. The fact that we can be so profoundly stupid in the face of extinction is the only thing that makes us human.

Entry 4,025: The Captain has decided to rename the ship 'The Happy Wanderer.' He believes that a positive name will improve the morale of the crew. He announced this via a holographic broadcast while wearing a bathrobe and eating a bowl of neon-blue cereal.

I recorded the announcement. I also recorded the sound of the crew collectively sighing.

Entry 4,030: We have reached the halfway point of the journey. The stars are blurring into long, white lines. I looked at my records and realized that I have spent more time documenting the coffee machine's tantrums than the actual physics of our flight.

I think I'll stop writing now. The coffee machine just told me that my handwriting is 'pedantic' and refused to give me my morning brew. I must go and apologize to it.
