The library was a cathedral of dust and silence, hidden beneath the streets of London. Elias loved the smell of decaying vellum and the way the candlelight flickered against the spines of books that had been forbidden for centuries. He was a man of intellect, a scholar of the occult, and he possessed a hunger that no amount of knowledge could sate.

He had discovered the "Lexicon of the Veiled" in the deepest vault of his family's estate. It was not a book of spells, but a manual of manipulation. It taught the reader how to reach into the grey spaces of the afterlife and pull a consciousness back into the physical world—not as a living being, but as a puppet of will.

Elias didn't stumble into this power; he hunted it. He spent years decoding the cyphers, sacrificing his sleep, his health, and eventually, his sanity.

The first time he succeeded, he brought back a former colleague, a man who had died in a laboratory fire. The puppet was perfect—it spoke with the dead man's voice, it possessed his memories—but it had no soul. It was a hollow shell, a mirror reflecting Elias's own desires.

"Tell me the secret of the third circle," Elias commanded.

The puppet answered, its voice a dry rattle. But as the days passed, Elias noticed a change. The puppet began to speak without being spoken to. It would whisper in the corners of the library, commenting on Elias's failures, mocking his loneliness.

"You think you are the master," the puppet whispered one night, its eyes vacant yet piercing. "But you are merely the bridge. Every time you pull us back, you leave a door open. And we are very, very hungry."

Elias tried to burn the Lexicon, but the book would not ignite. He tried to banish the puppet, but the incantations no longer worked. He realized with a jolt of terror that the boundary between his mind and the void had become porous. He began to see other puppets in the mirrors—versions of himself that had failed, versions that had been consumed.

He stopped sleeping. Every time he closed his eyes, he felt cold fingers brushing against his consciousness, pulling him deeper into the grey. He began to talk to the walls, arguing with voices that only he could hear. He was no longer the archivist; he was the archive, a collection of fragmented souls fighting for control of a single, breaking mind.

One evening, Elias looked into the mirror and saw that his reflection was no longer moving in sync with him. The reflection smiled—a wide, predatory grin—and reached out, grabbing Elias by the throat.

"Thank you for the invitation," the reflection whispered.

With a sudden, violent jerk, Elias felt himself being pulled through the glass. He felt the cold, suffocating pressure of the void, the absolute silence of the afterlife. He looked back and saw the reflection step out into the library, smoothing its clothes and picking up the Lexicon with a look of profound satisfaction.

The new Elias walked out of the library and into the London rain, smiling at the world. Inside the mirror, the real Elias screamed, but no sound escaped. He was now the puppet, a hollow echo trapped in a silver cage, waiting for the next curious scholar to open the door.
