Echoes of the Lash

The training camp was a concrete slab in the middle of a New Jersey wasteland, smelling of diesel and desperation. I remember the first day. We were the 'Chosen,' a group of twenty-four recruits for a private security firm that operated in the grey spaces of the law.

The instructor was a man named Miller. He didn't talk; he barked. He looked at us like we were malfunctioning equipment.

I remember Sarah and Leo. They were the ones who thought they were untouchable. Sarah had a father who owned half of Long Island, and Leo had a pedigree that went back to the Mayflower. They treated Miller’s drills like a tedious chore.

"Pivot!" Miller would scream.

Sarah would take her time, adjusting her gear with a slow, deliberate arrogance. Leo would whisper a joke in her ear, and they would both dissolve into a fit of giggles while the rest of us stood there, sweating and shaking.

I remember the second time. The air was thick with heat. Miller’s face was a mask of indifference. He gave the order to halt. Sarah didn't stop. She kept walking, a smirk on her face, her eyes locked on Miller as if challenging him to actually do something.

Miller didn't scream. He didn't even blink.

He just stepped aside and let the 'Cleaners' in.

They didn't use guns. They used a precision that was more terrifying than violence. In three minutes, Sarah and Leo were gone. Not dead, but 'deleted.' Their contracts were voided, their passports burned, and they were tossed into the back of a black van, destined for a processing center that didn't exist on any map.

I watched the van drive away. I remember the silence that followed—a silence so heavy it felt like it was crushing my lungs.

I looked at my boots. I didn't look at Miller. I didn't look at the other recruits. I just waited for the next command.

When Miller finally spoke, his voice was just a whisper. "Next."

I pivoted. I halted. I became a ghost. I didn't feel the heat anymore, and I didn't feel the fear. I just felt the void where my will used to be, and for the first time in my life, I felt safe. Because in this place, the only way to survive was to stop being a person.
