The Anatomy of a Scream

The corridors of St. Jude’s Asylum were designed to swallow sound. The walls were thick, the floors were rubberized, and the air was heavy with the scent of bleach and old fear. Dr. Alistair Thorne, the head of the psychiatric ward, took pride in that silence. He was a man of science, a pioneer in the study of "induced regression," attempting to find the root of human violence by stripping away the ego.

But Alistair had a secret. He was his own most successful experiment.

Deep within his subconscious, Alistair had cultivated a second persona—a creature of pure, unadulterated aggression that he called "The Sculptor." The Sculptor didn't see people; he saw raw material. He saw the tension in a tendon, the fragility of a collarbone, the exact point where a spirit snaps. The Sculptor didn't want to heal; he wanted to rearrange.

The transitions happened in the blink of an eye. One moment, Alistair was a gentle physician comforting a patient with a soft voice and a reassuring smile; the next, he was The Sculptor, rearranging the patient's anatomy in a lapped-out basement, his movements precise and devoid of empathy.

The horror was not in the violence, but in the beauty Alistair found in it. He began to see the blood on the white tiles as a form of expression, a red calligraphy of the soul. He started to believe that the only way to truly know a human being was to break them down to their most basic, screaming components, to find the truth that only exists in the moment of absolute terror.

As the months passed, the boundary between the two personas began to dissolve. Alistair started seeing The Sculptor in the mirror, smiling back at him with a hunger that could not be sated. He began to hear the Sculptor's voice in his head, whispering suggestions, pointing out the "flaws" in his colleagues and his patients.

One night, Alistair woke up to find his own hands covered in blood, the red liquid dried into a dark crust under his fingernails. On the table before him lay his favorite assistant, meticulously disassembled like a clock, the organs arranged in a perfect, geometric pattern.

Alistair didn't scream. He didn't feel horror. He leaned in and admired the symmetry of the carnage, the exquisite precision of the cuts. He realized that the experiment was complete. The doctor was gone. Only the Sculptor remained.
