Market Correction

In the city of Omni-York, the sky was not a sky; it was a series of layered advertisements for products that promised immortality, youth, and the conquest of the void. The city covered the entire planet, a sprawling hive of steel and greed where the only thing more valuable than oxygen was information.

Marcus Thorne, CEO of Void-Corp, stood in his office on the 10,000th floor, looking down at the smog-choked streets. To the public, Void-Corp was a terraforming company, bringing life to dead worlds. In reality, it was a brokerage for the end of the world.

"The Dark Forest is a wonderful thing, isn't it, Sarah?" Marcus said, not turning around.

Sarah, a corporate spy who had spent three years infiltrating his inner circle, kept her face a mask of professional indifference. "Most people think it's a myth, Marcus. A ghost story for astronomers."

"That's why it's so profitable," Marcus smiled. "The 'Great Silence' is the ultimate market opportunity. If you know which civilizations are about to be erased, you can short their assets. You can buy their technology for pennies before the 'correction' hits. We don't just predict the apocalypse; we trade on it."

Sarah felt a chill that had nothing to do with the office's climate control. The cosmic horror of the Dark Forest—the idea that any civilization that reveals itself is doomed—had been reduced to a line item on a balance sheet.

"And the signals we're sending out?" Sarah asked. "The 'Peace Beacons'?"

"Marketing," Marcus replied simply. "We use the beacons to lure out the smaller, naive species. We let them think they've found a friend, and then we sell their coordinates to the highest bidder in the void. It's a clean, efficient system. We get the credits, the predators get the prey, and the universe stays quiet."

Sarah's hand tightened around the data-drive in her pocket. She had the evidence—the coordinates of a dozen "harvested" worlds, the logs of the trades. She could bring the whole empire down.

"You're a monster," she whispered.

"I'm a capitalist, Sarah. The universe is a cold, empty place. I'm just the only one honest enough to put a price tag on it."

Marcus turned to her, his eyes cold and empty. "But here is the problem with the market: eventually, there is a bubble. And we've just hit the ceiling."

He pointed to the screen. A signal had arrived. Not from a small species, not from a trade partner, but from the same entity Void-Corp had been using as its primary "broker." The message was short, a single coordinate: the location of Omni-York.

"It seems the broker has decided to consolidate its portfolio," Marcus said, his voice devoid of emotion. "We've been sold."

Sarah looked at the data-drive in her hand. It was useless. There was no one left to tell. As the sky above Omni-York began to fold like a piece of paper, she realized that in the end, the market always corrects itself.
