The Grease and the Glory

My job was simple: keep the pipes from bursting. I spent fourteen hours a day in the belly of the Solar Leviathan, a city-sized ship that looked like a chrome needle piercing the heart of the sun. While the 'Architects' lived in the Upper Spires, drinking synthesized wine and talking about the 'Triumph of Human Will,' I lived in the grease.

"Check the thermal seals on Sector 4, Mike," the foreman would bark, his voice echoing through the steam-filled corridors. "And don't let the leak reach the core, or we're all toast."

The Leviathan was a miracle of engineering, or so the brochures said. But from where I stood, it was just a series of leaking valves and screaming metal. I remember the day the first 'Glory-Sickness' hit. A young technician, barely twenty, had been exposed to a raw solar leak. He didn't die; he just started glowing. A soft, golden light emanated from his pores, and he began to speak in a language that sounded like crashing glass.

They took him to the Spires for 'study.' He never came back. But a week later, the Spires announced a new energy efficiency record.

I started keeping a notebook. Not the technical logs, but a list. A list of the missing. The ones who 'transferred to other sectors.' The ones whose names were scrubbed from the manifest after a pipe burst.

"It's for the greater good, Mike," the foreman told me once, when he caught me staring at the empty locker of a friend. "A few sparks are necessary to keep the fire burning."

One night, I found a hidden vent that led to the Upper Spires. I climbed for three hours, my lungs burning, until I reached the gardens of the Architects. I saw them—the men who owned the sun—walking through holographic forests, their skin shimmering with the same golden light as the technician. They weren't studying the Glory-Sickness; they were harvesting it. They were using the agony of the workers to extend their own lives, turning human suffering into a fountain of youth.

I didn't scream. I didn't try to be a hero. I just went back down to Sector 4, found the main thermal seal, and loosened a single, critical bolt.

As the alarms began to wail and the gold-fire started to flood the corridors, I sat down against the wall and lit a cigarette. I watched the grease begin to boil.
